This study aims to evaluate quantitatively springback characteristics evolved in the sheet metal forming process for thin-walled members in order to investigate reasons of shape inaccuracy and to find their remedy. The geometric springback amounts are classified into the six modes: punch springback, flange springback, wall curl, ridge curl, section twist and axial twist. The measuring methodology of each springback mode is suggested and quantitative measurement is carried out to find out the tendency of shape accuracy. The target products in this study are an S-rail and two kinds of automotive members used in a small-sized SUV vehicle. For the S-rail, the forming experiment is carried out with the four kinds of steel sheets that have different tensile strength such as 340MPa, 440MPa, 590MPa and 780MPa in order to evaluate the effect of the tensile strength on the springback behavior. Also three types of draw-beads are utilized in the experiment to find out the effect of the restraining force on the springback characteristics. For the two kinds of center cross member of an autobody, the same kinds of the steel sheets are utilized. After obtaining formed prototypes, the three dimensional shape of the product is extracted with a 3-dimensional optical scanner and is converted into the 3D CAD model. From the CAD model, designated sections are cut and the six kinds of springback modes are calculated with the suggested measuring method. Amounts of springback from the experiment show that they are greatly affected by the tensile strength of the blank sheet and the shape of the tools. Almost springback modes except the section twist and the axial twist shows the linearly increasing tendency with respect to the tensile strength of the blank. Among many shape parameters, the springback amount is influenced mainly by the height, round region in the planar direction and embossment. Finite element forming analysis is performed to clarify the limitations of the accuracy in the springback analysis. Analyses are carried out using the same conditions with the experiment. Amounts of springback in each mode are extracted and the error is calculated with the normalized root mean square error method. The analysis result shows fairly good agreement with the experimental one in the information about deformation such as the edge draw-in and the thickness reduction. The result from error analysis shows the accuracy limitation in the prediction of wall curl, ridge curl and section twist. The results from this study is expected to use the basic data for applying into the design and the compensation procedure of the press die with the high strength steel that induces the large amount of springback.
