The mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between parental psychological control and social problem solving in college students원문보기

Most of college students today depend economically on their parents, and parents, in return, frequently intervene in their college lives or career choices. Thus it is difficult to regard college students as full grown-ups even though they are considered as adults in society. Reflecting such a phenomenon, recently a number of studies have conceptualized a generation between adolescence and adulthood as ‘emerging adulthood', which has dependence as in childhood and adolescence and does not carry out adult roles yet. Parental psychological control in emerging adulthood, intruding into psychological and emotional development of college students, has negative effect on their self-esteem, which is closely related to the ability of problem solving in their everyday living. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate whether self-esteem would mediate the relation between parental psychological control and social problem solving of college students in emerging adulthood. The subjects included 356 college students (male: 47.2%, female: 52.8%, mean age: 20.81 years of age) registered in a four-year college or university in Seoul Metropolitan area. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that self-esteem functioned partially as a mediator in the relation between parental psychological control and social problem solving. In the analysis of gender differences, it was revealed that the self-esteem of male college students had partial mediating effects, which was consistent with the overall result, while the self-esteem of female students had perfect mediating effects. Unlike in most of the previous studies in regard to parental psychological control where subjects were mostly children or adolescents, the subjects of present study were college students and it was found that parental psychological control continued to have valid effects in college students. The finding that the self-esteem mediated the relation between parental psychological control and social problem solving suggests that counseling interventions focusing on self-esteem can be effective in counseling practice with college students.
