The purpose of this research is to find the effect of set intensity changes on agonist Muscle fitness in bench press exercise. Eleven healthy college male students with an average age of twenty two participated in the research. The subjects received six different methods of bench press exercise, where the intensity was made different in a total of three sets with a two-minute break between sets. The three set intensity of bench press exercise comprised high intensity(90%-1RM), mid intensity(70%-1RM) and low intensity(50%-1RM). The exercise program was constructed in six ways by arranging the intensity in different ways among sets. They are 1) low-mid-high, 2)low-high-mid, 3)mid-low-high, 4)mid-high-low, 5)high-mid-low, and 6)high-low-mid. In order to compare and analyze the state of muscle fitness of bench press agonist (musculus pectoralis major and triceps brachii muscle), bench press motor ability test (with the repetition of 70%-1RM bench press) was done three minutes after a three-set exercise treatment. Also, iEMG and MEF of bench press agonist was examined in the test. The effect of set intensity change on muscle damage(Cortisol, CK) and muscle growth(IGF-1, Testosterone) index was compared and analyzed through the analysis of blood taken right after the three-set exercise treatment. The results of the research are as follows. 1. The result 70%-1RM bench press exercise test showed the highest repetition after the exercise in low-mid-high intensity(8.0±1.3) and the lowest repetition after the exercise in high-mid-low intensity(4.8±2.1). 2. According to the result of electromyogram test of agonist during the 70%-1RM bench press exercise, different ways of exercise showed no difference in iEMG or MEF in the case of musculus pectoralis major. In the case of triceps brachii muscle, there was a statistically significant and low difference of either iEMG or MEF in some of different ways of exercise, but it was not a consistent result. 3. The result of cortisol analysis among muscle damage-related indexes showed some statistically significant differences in some methods of exercise, but it lacked consistency. The analysis of CK didn't show the consistency to separate the different effect in order although the low-mid-high and high-low-mid ways of exercise showed higher responses than other methods. 4. Among the indexes related to muscle growth, IGF-1 did not show a significant difference in its relations with methods of exercise intensity. Even though testosterone was found to be higher in the mid-high-low method than in low-high-mid method, this result was not meaningful, either. To sum up, among the three sets of bench press exercise, the low-mid-high intensity has the weakest influence on the change of agonist muscle fitness after exercise. The result supports the general theory that the change of exercise intensity gives less burden when it transfers from weak to strong. I suggest that follow-up research is needed in order to find out how the difference of training effect will be shown in the long-term resistance training which pursues intensity changes among sets.
