As a study on the production of bioethanol from food wastes, this study is including the estimation of energy potentiality produced from food wastes and evaluation of the major influence factors on the saccharification and/or fermentation processes for bioethanol production. Besides, this aims to improve the conversion rate of the saccharified liquid of food wastes, containing a mixture of pentose and hexose, to bioethanol using S. coreanus, which is generally used in the fermentation of glucose, and P. stipitis, which is used in the fermentation of xylose, one of pentose.
Although most of food wastes generated are recycled as feeding stock for animals, composting for agriculture and so on, the efficiency of productions or utility of products is yet questionable. And new and/or renewable energy, which is one of clean energy for next generation, produced from nature and/or wastes comes in the spotlight recently. From the results estimated under the assumption that all of food wastes carried into the food waste recycling facilities located in each province are converted to energies such as methane, bioethanol and char by pyrolysis, the energy potential was estimated as follows; 319.6 kTOE/yr as methane, 114.9 kTOE/yr as bioethanol and 104.9 - 118.0 kTOE/yr as char, showing the possibility to use as new biomass for bioethanol production.
From the result of evaluation on the major factors influencing the saccharification and/or fermentation processes for bioethanol production, the acetic acid generated from food waste shows a different production tendency according to composition and time passed. At the time of collecting samples, acetic acid from food wastes of grains and fruits was 274.2 and 194.4 mg/L, respectively, while nothing was detected in vegetables. However, after 2 days, acetic acid generated from fruits and vegetables was 7 times higher in fruits and 3 times higher in vegetables than that in grains. Production characteristics also differed by composition, with grains showing similar levels from day zero to 8, but with fruits showing a maximum value of 2,241.2 mg/L on day 6 and with vegetables also showing a maximum value of 1,888.7 mg/L on day 8. Nevertheless, the concentration of acetic acid produced naturally for a week is not influenced on the ethanol fermentation process.
And, ethanol produced through biological saccharification and fermentation from incubated food waste in each composition was affected by initial sugar concentration and food waste composition. Ethanol production in grains having a high sugar content between 141.2 and 216.0 g/L (glucose basis) was not active because of the inhibitory effect of initial sugar concentration.
The results of the investigation on the bioethanol fermentation by individual and the mixture of S. coreanus and P. stipitis are as below.
In the fermentation using S. coreanus, the result of the fermentation under anaerobic conditions was better than under aerobic conditions. In the anaerobic fermentation, the concentrations of the reducing sugar and glucose remaining after 24 hrs were 9.09 and 1.88 g/L, respectively, with 40.6 g/L of ethanol produced; the ethanol productivity was 1.69 g/L-hr. In the fermentation using P. stipitis, the reducing sugar and glucose were rapidly decreased until 72 hrs, with marked ethanol production. However, after 72 hrs, a moderate decrease was observed in the amount of the carbon source, but almost no ethanol was produced. Even after 168 hrs, glucose still remained in the fermentation liquid, with less ethanol produced than in both the anaerobic and aerobic fermentations using S. coreanus.
Therefore, to produce a high concentration of bioethanol from food wastes, the ethanol fermentation should be induced by S. coreanus until the middle of the fermentation, with P. stipitis used during the later part of the fermentation and; thus, the carbon source not converted by S. coreanus would be converted to ethanol by P. stipitis under the conditions that favor its use. As a result, both ethanol production and productivity increase over those of the anaerobic fermentation using S. coreanus.
And the consumption of xylose, one of pentose, was verified from the fermentation of saccharified liquid containing the pentose of 32 % and hexose of 59 %, which was produced from the saccharification of vegetables wastes, and that was enhanced by the injection of air to the fermentation process by P. stipitis. Finally, it was clear that the hexose and pentose in saccharified liquid were consumed to 97 % and 34 % compared to initial those concentrations by the mixture of S. coreanus and P. stipitis and the production of bioethanol increased compared to the result of individual fermentation of each yeast.
As a result, this study could be used to help produce a high concentration of ethanol from biomass, wherein monosaccharide and disaccharide, as well as glucose were contained in the saccharified liquid from food wastes.
