The purpose of this research is to analyse the extent of knowledge and the differences of experiences and attitude about respecting old people of university students who will encounter and go through changes caused by the advent of elderly society.
The researchers examined 515 men and women, and all of them were students of a four-year university located in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do. The survey consisted of questions in nine categories: gender, age, grade, major, religion, number of brothers and sisters in their family, type of family, growth area, economic condition.
First, the differences in knowledge about old people according to general characteristics are statistically significant in three areas: religion, major and grade. To begin with, students holding their own religion have more positive attitude toward and higher degree of knowledge about old people. In addition, the survey shows students in different majors unrelated to welfare for the aged have higher level of knowledge as well as those in major course in silver industry. This result can be interpreted that today, students’ interest in the elderly is on the rise regardless of their majors.
Lastly, in terms of grade, freshmen and sophomores’ level of knowledge about old people are more higher than juniors and seniors.’
Second, students having experienced to help the elderly, having provided their seats to them before or holding positive attitude to supporting their old parents in the future shows higher level of knowledge about respect of old people and experiences with them than those who have not and who do not.
Thirdly, the differences in attitude toward old people based on general characteristics are statistically significant in three areas: religion, number of brothers and sisters, and economic condition. Firstly, in terms of religion, students holding their own religion.
expecially believers in Buddhism have more positive attitude to words the elderly. Second, with number of brothers and sisters, students keep the positive attitude when they have 3 or 4 brothers and sisters. Lastly, when it comes to economic condition, middle and low-income family have more positive attitude toward the elderly rather than upper class.
Lastly, the differences in attitude toward respect of old people and experiences with them are statistically significant in mindset of students. Students selected positive answers who take supporting their old parents in the future mentally and economically for granted and who take a position that people should treat them with respect.
Based on these results, it is expected that perspective on upcoming elderly society will be bright and optimistic and that the participants’ positive attitude to words old people also can help to bring both generations, the old and the young, together and reestablish a close relationship between them.
However, this research has limitations to assert the entire differences of experiences and attitude about respecting old people of university students in that the subjects was restricted in students of a four-year university located in a city of Iksan and influencing items in questionnaire also are limitative.
Therefore, the study on subjects in a range of fields with various features is need to be implemented. In addition, in order to help people to get right information about the elderly, experts in the filed of old people’s welfare and silver industry need to plan and develop specific programs such as volunteering at elderly care facility, a one-day experiencing project to be old people, diverse educational program for learning about old people, which facilitates and increases chances for mutual exchange of opinions and contact between two generations.
Besides, the young generations should awake to the significance of the welfare of old people and to the need for recognition of their tasks as future supporters of ole generations. In this context, both the Korean government and individuals need to have more attention to Silver industry in preparation for aged society and super-aged society to come.
