Since museums are the most representative examples of space for informal education and places of life-long education, more and more families visit museums, and the role of museums as the space for effective family participative learning is coming into attention as well. Hence, the number of museum education programs targeted at families is rising. However, many examples of educational programs for families in different museums were merely targeted toward families and lacking in the characteristics of family-unit learning and museum education. Therefore, this paper derives elements of family-friendly educational programs in museums so that such programs will be appropriate to the museum environment and family-focused programs will be carried out effectively, developed and applied programs based on them, and observed cooperative learning context of participant families, parents’ role types, and satisfaction as the result. First of all, in order to derive family-friendly factors, this research delved into educational theories such as zone of proximal development and community of practice including social constructivism, through which process of family-unit learning can be understood and predicted, and analyzed and referred to researches of Borun and Dierking, the leading researchers on family visitors. The educational programs in museum developed with the family-friendly factors derived from those researches as the basis were carried out in the Presseum with families including elementary school students as targets. According to the program’s assessment result, participant families interacted actively overall and realized cooperative learning context, and the role of the parents appeared in different forms as information provider, learning facilitator, and co-learner. Lastly, participants showed high levels of satisfaction, and one of the reasons was pointed out to be cooperative activities by the families, showing that cooperative learning has positive effects on the satisfaction from the education program as well. In conclusion, I hope that more family-friendly programs based on the elements of family-friendly educational programs presented in this research are developed and applied, so that there will be more chances for families visiting museums to experience good educational programs, in which children and parents can partake together.
