This thesis explores characteristics of subtitling translation and dubbing translation. Subtitling translation has time and space limitation. Since viewers have limited number of words that they can read in one scene where subtitle appear, no matter how long the orignal text can be, ellipsis or condensation could be used to enhance readability. For dubbing translation, the translator has to consider length of lines, matching starting and ending point of line with translation. This study uses 5 animations; How to Train Dragon, Toy Story 3, Shrek forever after, Despicable Me and Hoodwinked to take a look into translation strategies that are applied to translation depending on subtitling translation and dubbing translation. The results suggest that both subtitling and dubbing translation use the same strategies when it comes to translation of cultural elements. Furthermore, since it is audiovisual translation, the translator has to take images and sound into consideration for translation. The study emphasizes on the different strategies used in subtitling translation and dubbing translation. Ellipsis and condensation are mostly used for subtitling translation. Name, object, filler and sentences are omitted or condensed, which does not hinder for audience to understand the meaning. Even though ellipsis and condensation are less used for dubbing translation, it can be more freely translated. Viewers can only hear translated dubbing version, no chance to compare it with original text. In particular, when celebrities are involved in dubbing, their images to public or famous line can be reflected on the translation more easily. In conclusion, with lack of studies for dubbing translation, the study tries to show not only characteristics of subtitling translation, but dubbing translation and their examples in order to analyze similarities and differences between subtitling and dubbing translation. Still, more studies need to be made and more examples need to be analyzed from various genres on the field of audiovisual translation.
