This study evaluated the effect of plant-mineral composite on the control of nuisant algae and water quality improvement, in both laboratory and outdoor experiments.
The laboratory test evaluated; (1) algal growth inhibition activity on cyanobacteria and green algae using three kinds of plant extracts, three minerals and the mixture of plant extracts and minerals, (2) the analysis of major components of the plant-mineral composite and biological toxicity assessment, and finally (3) the effect of a mixture on the algal reduction according to various environmental conditions such as agent concentration, light intensity, water temperature, pH, water depth, algal species composition. Outdoor test was conducted to evaluate the applicability of the plant-mineral composite in eutrophic lakes and stream.
The results indicated that cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa) was effectively inhibited (> 60% of the control) at the low concentration (1 mg L-1) of plant extracts from each of Quercus acutissima and Camellia crenata and natural zeolite. Green alga (Scenedesmus quadricauda) was also inhibited over 65% of the control by natural zeolite, and less than 50% of the control by each extract of C. sinensis and Q. acutissima. Chlorella vulgaris was inhibited by all substance at high concentration, except for C. sinensis for which inhibition efficiency was not high. Plant-mineral composite showed greater than 80% of inhibition, regardless of algal species at high concentrations (1∼10ppm). M. aeruginosa and S. quadricauda were inhibited greater than 80% and 50% at 0.05 ppm, respectively, indicating that plant-mineral composite was an effective agent of algal control. Analysis for major constituents of plant-mineral composite showed that Al and Si exist at high concentration. Also oleic acid (41.0 mg L-1) and linoleic acid (34.0 mg L-1) were found to exist at the highest concentrations in fatty acid. Biotoxicity assessment of plant-mineral composite showed that EC50 value of 72-hour average growth rate of phytoplankton (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) was 7.8 mg L-1. EC50 value at 48- hour on zooplankton (Daphnia magna) was >100 mg L-1, while its NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration) also was >100 mg L-1. LC50 value at 96-hour on fish (Oryzias latipes) was >100 mg L-1.
The highest algal removal rate was observed at 0.05∼1.0 ml L-1 of plant-mineral composite concentrations, where greater than 80% of phytoplankton biomass reduced. Therefore, 0.05 mg L-1 was selected as an optimum applying concentration. Other optimum condition of environmental variables for effective application were 1,400 μmol m-2s-1 for light intensity (>90% of algal reduction), 20∼30℃ for water temperature (>60% of algal reduction), 7∼9 for pH (>90% of algal reduction), below 50 cm for water depth (>90% of algal reduction), and cyanobacteria for dominant algal taxa (>80% of algal reduction).
The results of field application showed that plant-mineral composite treatment reduced significantly suspended solids, phyto- and zooplankton and nutrients (especially TP). A tested stream (Kyungan Stream) with low algal biomass, low suspended solids concentration, short residence time, and fluctuating water level showed a relatively low level of water quality improvement (90%). These results suggest that the plant-mineral composite has a great potential to remove the nuisant algal blooms and to improve water quality in eutrophic waters.
