MEMS(Micro electro mechanical system)

The thesis introduces a novel technique and system design for the EHD inkjet printing that fit the demand of direct patterning technology for the printed electronics. There have been various applications which require a realization of small patterns. The new technique overcomes several key vital weaknesses of traditional inkjet printing methods.
Conventional lithography for MEMS fabrication may always be an important mark that changes the human life. The lithography technique allows a fabrication of precise patterns up to submicron. However, the lithography MEMS technique requires high cost, toxic chemicals, waste of expensive material during the process. These are limits for employing lithography to fabricate electronics devices with eco-friendly and cost-effective process. Seeking for an alternative fabrication tool arises, especially when flexible electronics have been developed. Inkjet technology offers direct patterning on various type of substrate and acquires a lot of attention in recent research activity. However, low resolution of traditional inkjet still prevents the technique to be applied in the modern demand. The new inkjet technique which is presented in this thesis revises the conventional EHD inkjet to achieve a better resolution and can be used in micron and sub-micron patterning. This study aims to understand the characteristics of the charged liquid meniscus under the electric field and develop a hybrid electrohydrodynamic (EHD) nano-inkjet printing technique that offers better uniformity and stable operation in drop-on-demand (DOD) patterns compared to the conventional methods. This hybrid technique takes advantage of both electrohydrodynamic and piezoelectric methods where a piezoelectric actuator is used to supply a fixed volume of ink to the nozzle's exit for every jetting period, and the electrohydrodynamic technique is used to form ink droplets. In addition, the printing system has been developed and the real fine patterning has been demonstrated.
