This essay is written to study how the history of Korea and Japan is written in North Korean Elementary history education and what contents is in it. Because the gap between North and South Korean educational system and curriculum is quite enormous, I considered the students' age and written styles of textbooks to decide the range of analysis for this study. The range of Elementary history education in this study is history textbooks for 8~13 age students. Actually there were 4 subjects about political ideas which aimed for idolizing Kim il-sung and his son in Elementary school(age 8-11). In that 4 subjects, historical texts about Korea and Japan were so fragmentary that it was needed to set different categories for some historical writings rather than categorize by period. The description of them was written fragmentarily and repetitedly with certain purpose rather related historical events. So they were not strictly categorized as "history subject". Therefore it seemed that first start of history education was for 12~13 age students in Middle school. The targets of this analysis were decided as 1,2 for 12 and 13 age students. I analyzed contents about historical events between Japan and Korea by period. I divided the contents into 4 parts : From Ancient Chosun to Balhae and United Shinla, Corea, Early Chosun Dinasty (From the beginning of Chosun to the time of Enlightment, and Post Chosun Dinasty (From the time of Enlightment to the Japanese Rulling Era). As a result of analysis I could find some consistent tendency of historical description of relations between Korea and Japan. One of them was that "Anti-Japan" feeling achieved dominant position in historical writing. Description about positive exchanges and cooperation between 2 countries were left out. The appellation of Japan was quite negative as well. In case of some historical events which got good evaluation in North Korean historical studies were related to Japan, they left out the parts about relations with Japan. Some historical events were evaluated negatively just because Japan was related deeply. This trend was applied without exception. Furthermore there were some description with distortion and severe omission. Another features of description tendency was that present-tense and past-tense were mixed. They reflected present relation with Japan in historical writing about past relations between Korea and Japan. Also North Korean students had to study 2 or more different period at the same time, because their 4 political subjects are biography of 2 persons with different eras. There were some description that Japan is still our enemy and our aggressive relation had been continued. The appellation of Japan was mixed with past titles. In the description of Japan there are only depiction about conflicts, struggles and antagonism rather than cooperation and friendship between countries. These description tendency will influence North Korean students grow wrong view that the main power of developing history is the victory in struggles and conflicts. We need to know that historical view and practical history education of North and South Korea is quite distinct. With realizing true condition of North and Korean history education, we can start to prepare united history education.
