This study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the gifted in terms of brain science and to provide implications for educating gifted children. The study was performed comprehensively reviewing research studies on the human brain and the gifted. Development of gifted children's brain is characterized as oversprouting, synaptic pruning, and myelination of neurons. The frontal lobe of gifted children fully develops during the period of synaptic pruning, whereby more synaptic connections remain and are activated than in the brain of regular children. The brain of gifted children functions more efficiently than that of ordinary children. Efficiency of the brain is associated with myelination of neurons and neural networking. More dopamine is secreted in the brain of gifted children. Dopamine plays an important role in activating the frontal lobe. Gifted children are more likely to be motivated as the amount of dopamine increases. Generally, the limbic system tends to develop earlier and more initiative than the frontal lobe with ordinary children. In the brain of gifted children, however, the frontal lobe takes the initiative over the limbic system. Educational implications based on the characteristics of gifted children's brain are as follows. First, appropriate stimuli should be designed to enhance gifted children's learning by activating their neural networks. Secondly, curriculum for the gifted needs to be flexible to facilitate intrinsic motivation of gifted children. Gifted children should be encouraged to determine the phase of learning so that they can become more active learners. Thirdly, working memory of gifted children is more capacious than that of ordinary children, which should be reflected in developing curriculum of the gifted. Fourthly, gifted children should be provided educational environments in which they are emotionally and morally aroused.
