Effects of Lignocellulose-Derived Inhibitors on Cell Growth and Ethanol Production by Pichia stipitis원문보기

We investigated the effect of inhibitory compounds derived lignocellulosic hydrolysates on cell growth, sugar consumption and ethanol productivity, and also we intended to identify the potential for ethanol production based on lignocellulosic hydrolysates. When the concentration of acetate increased, the ethanol productivity and cell growth decreased. In the case of above 10 g/L of acetate, it caused inhibitory effect on cell growth and ethanol productivity. All concentrations of furans, from 1 g/L to 5 g/L, resulted in delay of cell growth and ethanol productivity. Furfurals showed higher inhibiotry effect on cell growth and ethanol production comparison to 5-HMF. As the concentration of furans in culture media increased, a longer lag time was observed and the time required for ethanol production increased. The medium including phenolics caused a longer lag phase. Higher concentration over 3 g/L of phenolics showed greater inhibitory effect on cell growth and ethanol production, i.e. no cell growth and no ethanol production. The cell growth and ethanol production of P. stipitis was strongly affected by acetate. Addition of process for deacetylation was introduced to detoxification of acetate. P. stipitis did not grow and produce of ethanol in yellow poplar hydrolysate containing 7.1 g/L of acetate. On the other hand, in the case of deacetylated poplar hydrolysate, the glucose was completely utilized within 48 hr and ethanol yield was 0.44 g (sugar)/g (ethanol). Low level of acetate (0.3 g/L to 3 g/L) were detected in waste log, rice husk and laminated wood. P. stipitis did grow and produce of ethanol in all conditions except in the case of yellow poplar hydrolysate.
