Determination of oxygen levels (PO2) in blood is critical in the clinical and physiological applications. For several decades, the various electrochemical oxygen sensors have been developed, which mostly employed amperometric detection techniques. Recently, a potentiometric oxygen sensor was proposed by Meyerhoff group based on a cobalt electrode. The potentiometric detection does not change the local concentration of oxygen during measurements, making this type of sensors more advantageous than the conventional amperometric sensors. In addition, since potentiometric signals are not affected by the electrode size, the miniaturization of oxygen sensors may be feasible. The potentiometric oxygen sensor is based on measuring a mixed potential at the surface of the cobalt metal. The mixed potential comes from the slow oxidation of cobalt and simultaneous reduction of oxygen at the cobalt surface. In this work, the cone-shape cobalt ultramicroelectrodes (d≈1㎛) are prepared via an electrochemical etching process as varying applied potential, frequency of AC voltage, and etching time. In addition, the effect of presence of interfering species (mostly dihydrogen phosphate ion) on potentiometric sensor performance is evaluated. To minimize such interference, a thin gas-permeable membrane (e.g., xerogel or silicone rubber film) will be employed.
