This study is intended to observe characteristics and meaning of planting design of Piet Oudolf, a typical artist of a new planting design tendency that receives attention recently. Contents of this study is divided into a theoretical consideration for planting design and identifying characteristics of planting design through understanding of design background and the works of Piet Oudolf. Planting design is a concept to which an objective for using planting design aesthetically on its meaningful basis is added. In order words, planting design is defined as specially symbolizing complex meaning of materials through the designer's own design technique and then resetting the space formatively in order to address unique atmosphere of space and aesthetic meaning through using planting materials by the designer. Form of planting design has been transformed historically along with a flow of landscaping or gardening history and its transformation has been continued until contemporary times. Along with transformation trend from a garden of Renaissance times to a formal garden of France and then to landscape style garden of U.K., planting design has been transformed from plants to be planted to planting style together as well. In a Renaissance garden of Italy, climbing plant was raised to the wall or pergola and herb plants and flowering plants had filled the garden to the full and the owners of villa had showed off their wealth and fame by introducing exotic plants. In the Moors garden of Spain, they planted plants by introducing them from eastern Mediterranean Sea, Persia and the Far East based on the plants species resistant to drought according to an environment where water is rare. French formal garden is very much characterized by a symmetric, formative structures and decorative design was made by using low shrubs based on parterre. In addition, flowering plants were planted at the low land considering color and texture. In the landscape style garden of U.K., plants afforested collectively were placed on the hillside along the slope. Main plants were comprised of conifers and broad-leaved trees and shrubs that have ornamental value were planted in a balanced form on a wide grassland. It was created near to the natural shape rather than making a formative shape with an intentional pruning. The more nearing to the contemporary times, there is a tendency of trying to introduce natural garden that plants diversified flowering plants in a flexible way or planting method reviving images of grassland or meadow. This tendency is making image of landscape look wild and mysterious like prairie through a way of using grass in a garden or landscaping space as a basic material and mixing a few flowering plants in large quantities. This tendency could be noticed even by observing famous flower show. In Chelsea Flower Show of U.K., naturalness was emerged on the forefront of garden theme since the beginning of 2002 and along with this trend, naturalistic planting was emerged as a main concern and in particular, importance of indigene and traditional element were emphasized. In addition, along with this aesthetic aspect, sustainability, alert to eco system and eco-friendly requirement were reflected in planting design. Piet Oudolf who represents a new trend of contemporary planting design was born in the Netherlands in 1944 and he is Plants man as well as a typical garden designer being called as a leader of New Wave Planting by theorists. As a prime mover often called as Oudolf Style by his nickname who created New Wave Planting, a new tendency of planting design, he takes up a unparallelled position in a planting design mixing grasses with perennials in particular. His style created with a superb combination of grasses and perennials is considered to be a result influenced by diversified horticulture including formative and natural planting style of the Netherlands and U.K. style floral garden and traditional form of garden. In order to understand the characteristics and meaning of planting design of Piet Oudolf, his latest works were selected and reviewed: 1) High Line, 2010, New York, 2) Lurie Garden, 2000, chicago, 3) Potterfield Park, 2007, London. Characteristics of planting design of Oudolf observed based on analytic contents is as follows. First, a space of synesthesia experience is provided through plant material, a basic composition element of planting design. Perennials preferred by Oudolf, grass leaves and flower texture play a role of stimulating sense of touch. In addition, garden could be experienced through noise of wobbling among grasses as his materials are mainly comprised of movement by wind rather than planting based on arbor or shrub. His planting design enables a synesthesis experience differentiated from previous space based on visual experience. Second, his planting design has a potential of sustainability. Plants that were mainly selected in his works are perennials and grass. In general, these plants have a wide adaptability to growing condition and their auto reproduction rate is excellent. In addition, these plants have an advantage of being resistant to disease and pest injury and having a least disturbance to natural eco system. Based on this reason, their economic efficiency is high in terms of creation and management cost. Along with this, two places among the target locations for analysis are creating a space in spite of an condition where sufficient soil depth is unable to be created due to an artificial foundation. It could be judged that these plants shows adaptability to gradually increased artificial foundation or rooftop green area. Third, through a space created by planting design, a new placeness is enable to be experienced. It is considered that his planting design is contributing to creating a place of image different from any urban park that could be seen with ease. Image of plain or grassland or natural image shown by his planting design on
