Students in the third grade of elementary school start to learn the English language just by listening and speaking according to the 7th revised Elementary School English Curriculum. However, many students have 2 or 3 years experience learning the English language. So there is a proficiency difference between those with early English experience and those without it. The purpose of this study is to find teaching techniques to overcome this proficiency gap. This study investigates the realities of early English language education, the students perceptions, and their affective characteristics such as interest, self-confidence, motivation, and anxiety through questionnaires and an achievement test. For subjects, two third-grade classes were chosen from two different elementary schools, located in Suncheon and Gwangyang of Jellanamdo province. The results showed that the experiences from early English education were widespread and had positive effects on affective characteristics, and school classes. Early English learners are better than those without English learning experience at listening, speaking, reading and writing English. My suggestion on how to overcome this proficiency gap is that the introduction of written language should not be delayed for early English education in public schools, which is the teaching practice of the current English curriculum. Moreover, the elementary school English curriculum should be connected to the subjects that students are studying for the school year. Those connections have merits not only in that they help students to focus on what they learn but also in that they help students to retain information more through repeated practice. Finally, teachers should encourage students with no early English learning experience and prepare useful practicing methods for class. Students should be given interesting and authentic materials to read and write during the class as well. Above all, it's important to stimulate students to learn English with pleasure, interest and self-contentment.
