A study of the Current Situation and Characteristics of Scenic Planting Following Spatial Arrangement of Temples in the Greater Chunnam Area Landscape Architecture Major Beak Do In Department of Landscape Architecture Graduate School, Dongsin University (Advised by Professor kim, gin seoung) Korean traditional temples are harmoniously constructed places; they have been a part of profound Korean history within nature. It also has been collaborated with characteristics of Buddhism, which pursue enlightenment and nirvana. The numerous wars including, Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597, Japanese Empire Occupation Period, and 6.25 Korean War, however, caused severe fires and damages and led to enormous lost for the temples. Changes of the original temple scenic planting were inevitable as continuous complete and partial modifications have been progressed for restorations. In particular, scenic planting has been radically transformed. Rather than considering the nature and uniqueness of space in the temples, planters solely depend on the engineering functions of trees, due to their personal preferences and lack of landscape information when choosing tree species for the space. The study has been conducted in the recognition of these problems. This study takes place within the traditional temple area by surveying the scenic planting situation to examine the characteristics, and intends to provide the future plan of the traditional landscape planting and maintenance plan based on the collected data. Research subjects are national cultural assets in the Chunnam area: Hwaeom temple, Songgwang temple, Seonam temple, and Daeheung temple. The chosen subjects were selected based on the national, historical, and academic importance according to the National Cultural Properties Protection Law, pursuant to Article 2, Paragraph 1.Through studying related documents and current situations, a list of tree cultivation spots in different spatial arrangements was created and analyzed. Summarizes the conclusions of this paper is as follows. Firstly, among the research temples’, the proportion of deciduous shrubs is: Hwaeom temple 3% (1 species), Songgwang temple 15% (8 species), Seonam temple 7% (4 species), Daeheung temple 20% (7 species) demonstrating simple cultivation. Thus, the landscapes should well assist the demonstration of religious rituals and its symbolic meanings. The landscapes should also be able to portray and emphasize the traditional temples’ Buddhist peculiarities including naught thought and emptiness. In order to accomplish these aspects, formation of a colony of deciduous shrubs consisting of flowers and scents is required. Secondly, numeric observation and organization were conducted. There are a total of 93 tree species planted on 627 sites, 15 kinds which were planted more than 10 times at 392 sites. The major tree cultivation proportion is 62.51% among the entire 627 sites at the research subject in the four temples. Furthermore, Seonam temple has the highest number for the plantation spots compared to the other temples: Songwang temple, Hwaeom temple, and Daeheung temple have 257, 158, 124, and 88 sites in the respective order. Thirdly, the four researched temple’s entrance areas, where gigantic trees are well maintained containing unique features, bridge the real and spiritual world. Each area shows different patterns of cultivation. Fourthly, the proportion of flowering trees in the four temples is 93 kinds out of a total 627. Five species of trees, the camellia, common crapemyrtle, royal azalea, prunus mume species, and Japanese apricot are numbered to 166 total trees and accounted for 26.5%. This percentage proves that the planters signify the importance of one of the Buddhist memorial ceremony – flowers, scent, and tea- flower offering spirit. Finally, the limitations found in the process of this research should be improved in the further study. First, for future research, research samples should expand to national temples to continue the study and compare the distinctiveness of planting according to spatial arrangement. Second, characteristics of cultivation types following the temple’s unique topography and microclimate factors should be investigated by studying precise floor prints containing geographical features and current measurements of the temples. In addition, continuous and periodic inspections for the designated national historic temples’ scenic plantings should be operated to study modifications and transitions of the temples’ landscapes. Third, the traditional Buddhist temples’ walls, windows, and doors are frequently seen with plants, including flowers in Dangcheong and patterns. In the future, studies focusing on the relevance of the meanings and symbols of the decorations to scenic planting are needed. Moreover, improvements on the techniques of representing Buddhism into the temple plantations should be considered in the future research.
