This study begins with the premise that literature is quite important in the reading education. The purpose of this study is to find an education method that can focus on and vitalize the response of learners, which had been formed by reading the short stories, that have simple structure but have the literary completeness, and applying the response-based theory. Accordingly, a response-based teaching model had been designed based on existing teaching-learning model of literature and applied to the class. An reading education method was sought that can (a) change the relation of students from ‘author-literary work’ production-relation to ‘literary work-reader’ communication-relation, (b) enhance the literature appreciation capability of students, and, (c) contribute in the students’ motivation for reading. A literary work can have its true meaning and value only through the reading of readers. The existence of the author and the literary work is also determined by the response of the readers. The study objects of the study were six students in the 2nd grade of a junior-high school. A preliminary test was done and students who did not show significant responses compared to their reading capacities and who did not have good expression capability were chosen as the study objects. The response-based theory began to receive attention as the paradigm of literature education moved from objectivism to constructivism. The notable keywords in the response-based theory are; ‘response’, ‘empty spot’, ‘transaction between text and reader’, ‘aesthetic reading’ and ‘inter-text nature’. Chapter II introduced the background of response-based theory related to the design of response-based reading education and suggested the study method. Then short stories that are favored by junior-high school curriculum were chosen. They were ‘sonagi’ (a passing rain), ‘memil-got pil muryeop’ (when buckwheat flowers bloom), ‘hin jong-I suyeom’ (white paper mustache) and ‘wunsoo joeun nal’ (a lucky day). A teaching model that can be applied of common denominator of literature and reading education was designed. In addition, the existing literature teaching-learning models applied of response-based theory were analyzed and examined, so that they could be used as significant information in future design of response-based literature teaching-learning models. In Chapter III, a literature education was done in following four steps, focusing on the teaching steps in the teaching-learning models of existing literature. First was the response forming step and a schema was used. Students were given the titles of short stories and they were asked to tell the class on what they associate with titles and on any experience they might have related to the titles. Students were also asked to read the short stories, determine which scenes are impressive and write down why they think those scenes are impressive. Second, after students read the short stories, transaction with the text was promoted using various expression skills. In this step, the responses of students were made more clear and concise by recognizing and applying the reader factors and text factors in a balanced way by way of aesthetics leading-questions and structured questions. Third, in this step, the text and the life of the reader were connected by literary discussion applied of ‘narrative conversation’. The response was intensified and the literary value was internalized by re-constituting the literary work with the reader’s own voice. Fourth, if the response of learner was extremely subjective, the formed errors were examined. The aesthetic nature and the value of literary works extracted by various activities were expanded. The response-based literature education was finished. The results achieved by the response-based reading education were as following. First, the responses of boy students and girl students were different. It means that the literature appreciation attitude and the aspects of development, sentiment and cognition work different on students dependent on their gender. Second, the response of individual students showed the trend of developing into a pattern. From this, it was possible to know that the structure of individual experience has impact on the structure of response. Third, in the application of seven categories of Squire Response, when the early responses, such as self-immersion or associative response, were formed in a smooth way, the vitalization of subsequent responses, such as literary judgment or normative judgment, was much easier. Fourth, the boundaries among the Squire responses were not clear. Fifth is the implications related to the literary discussion, applied of ‘narrative conversation’ skill that had substantial weight during the response intensification step. It is believed that the narrative type discussion is effective in finding the various viewpoints and possibilities by having the students sympathize with other students’ opinions and enhance their infectivity. The stiff discussion style does not give authority to students for free expression and it makes students participate in the discussion in a passive way. On the other hand, it is significant that the narrative type discussion is consistent with the core of response-based theory that respects the thinking and insight of learners and gives authority to students so that they can interpret and re-interpret their thinking and insights. Meanwhile, the limitations of this study were that the study objects were limited to small number of students and the learners’ responses could not be quantified in numbers, which is the limitation of the response-based theory. However, this study is not to suggest an epoch-making new framework for the literature reading. It is to examine the directivity of literature reading education based on the response-based theory. It is believed that this study has its significance in its con
