We measured the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra of rare earth ion (Eu3+ and Tm3+)-doped Sr(Zr,Hf)O3 synthesized by using the solid state reaction method. The doping of Eu3+ ions leads to sharp red emission lines at 2.01 eV and 2.08 eV for both SrZrO3 and SrHfO3. The relative strengths of these two peaks, which might be related to the local lattice distortion around Eu3+ ions, show monotonic decreases at higher temperatures. For the Tm3+-doping, the PL spectra of both compounds exhibit an infrared emission at 1.55 eV while the sharp emission lines at 2.63 eV and 2.71 eV are observed only for SrZrO3. These sharp peaks related to the local states for Eu3+ and Tm3+ are clearly observed even at room temperature. More interestingly, the doping with rare-earth ions is found to affect the blue emission near 2.5 eV, which is identified at the lowest temperatures for the undoped SrZrO3 and SrHfO3. This blue emission is suppressed significantly for the Eu3+-doped compound while it is detected even at room temperature, with a high energy shift, for the Tm3+-doped compound. We discuss the interaction of the rare-earth ion doping with possible impurity/defect states in SrZrO3 and SrHfO3.
