This study is to understand verbal abuses's actual condition occurring in communication between parents and their teenage children and to analyze their communication patterns.
In this regard, specific research subjects are as followed:
First, among the words teenage children hear from their parents, how do verbal abuses appear?
Second, what is the difference in the communication patterns between father and mother with their children, and is there any further difference led by the children’s gender, grade, or educational status of the parents?
Third, what relations exist between parents-teenage children communication, and family atmosphere, conversation time, necessity of nonviolent communication, open-type pattern, and problematic patterns?
Under these research subjects, one survey was completed. The survey targeted 8th and 9th graders of two Seoul based junior high school, and out of 438 responses, 380 were used excepting one-parent family and insincerely answered answers. To examine parents’ verbal abuses, teenagers had been asked to define three most unbearable words and the responses were analyzed and filed in accordance with Marshall(2003)’s ‘Forms of life-alienating communication' in his nonviolent communication theorem. In addition, to measure parents-children communication patterns, Hayoung Min(1991)’s Korea-customized Adolescent Form of PACI(Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory), by Olson and Barnes(1982) was used.
Throughout this research, the provided results were derived.
First, verbal abuses from parents to their teenage children were comprised of 42.6% coercion, 13.6% reproach, 8.3% comparison with others, 7.0% intimidation, 4.5% analysis, 1.2% responsibility denial, 1.2% name-tagging, .9% non-lingual expression, or Etc., .2% unremembered, .3% positive expression, .1% every single words are unlikable, and 1.8% none is unlikable. In the data, parents’ frequent uses of verbal abuses due to stresses from their children’s post-secondary education entrance exam and academic achievement were found.
Second, in parents-teenage children communication patterns, communication with father was 49.7 % open-type patterns and 50.3% problematic patterns, yet only 8.2% of teenagers chose father for their conversation partner, proving the absolute deficiency of intercommunication with father. Children’s grade and communication patterns were unrelated, and sons made better open type pattern communication with their fathers than daughters did.
Third, when parents’ communication patterns were open type, they showed meaningful interrelations with family atmosphere, conversation time, and necessity of non-violent communication. Open-minded fathers’(r=.497, p<.01) and open-minded mothers’ intercommunication pattern(r=.491, p<.01) revealed meaningful stable-interrelation with family atmosphere, proving the connection between open minded parents’ communication pattern and family atmosphere. Also, communication patterns of open-minded fathers and mothers revealed stable-interrelation with conversation time as well.
Consequently, the meaning and suggestion of this research are:
First, under the current situation where researches on parents’ verbal abuses barely exist, this research has the deep significance that verbal abuses teenagers hearing from their parents are specified in the point of nonviolent communication.
Second, by examining the importance of parents’ verbal abuse and parents-children communication, this research would provide foundation of the development on parent education program for parents-children communication.
