The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of varied resistive training intensity and rest intervals between sets on iEMG(integral electro myography), repetition maximum, and total work. Subjects were 14 college students with no resistive training experience within 3 months prior to the study. The subjects, tested with physical characteristics and one repetition maximum (1RM), went through 2 weeks of physical strength stabilizing period first. Then the subjects were weekly tested with 9 practice procedures, composed of diverse training intensities (90%, 75%, 60% of 1RM), and different rest intervals (1 min, 3 min, 5 min) between each set. In order to measure the effects of the rest interval and training intensity of independent factors on the variables of muscle function, two-way ANOVA was applied. The following results were obtained: At first, the iEMG of pectoralis major at high training intensity showed notable decrease rates from 1 min and 3 min rest intervals to 5 min rest intervals (p=.000). At low training intensity, the iEMG of pectoralis major showed more decreased rate of 1 min rest interval than that of 3 min and 5 min rest intervals (p=.015). The iEMG of tricepts brachii at high training intensity showed lower rates at 1 min rest interval compare to rates of 3 min and 5 min rest intervals (p=.000) At all levels of training intensities, the repetition maximum with 1 min rest intervals showed much rapid decrease rates (p=.000) starting from the 2nd set than that of 3 min and 5 min rest intervals. Moreover, the total work at all intensity, high, middle and low level showed decline of rates at 1min intervals after the 2nd set, compare to rates at 3 min and 5 min intervals (p=.000). Furthermore, the iEMG of pectoralis major at high training intensity level showed significantly lower rates at 1 min and 3 min intervals than that at 5 min rest intervals (p=.000). The iEMG of triceps brachii at high training intensity level showed significantly decreased rates at 1 min and 3min rest intervals (p=.000, p=.025). And the total work at middle and low intensity levels remained high at all 1 min, 3 min, and 5 min rest intervals. (p=.000) As above results show, to maintain the same load and target repetition maximum for an untrained person, muscle power training (90% of 1RM), muscle hypertrophy training (75% of 1RM) and muscle endurance training (60% of 1RM) should be applied with 5min or longer rest interval periods for 3 training sets. In addition, 2 training sets with 3 min rest intervals and a set with an 1 min rest interval were capable by the subjects. Thus, at least 3 min or longer rest intervals should be applied to maintain multiple training sets. In case for muscle endurance training, which requires shorter rest intervals, the intensity of exercise should be adjusted to 60% of 1RM or less. In conculusion, depending on diverse purposes of resistive training such as improving muscle power, muscular hypertrophy, or muscle endurance, appropriate exercising intensity and rest intervals should be applied.
