Due to the energy crisis, energy-efficient design and energy reduction technologies for buildings have been consistently developed by designers and engineers. The double skin facades(DSF) system is one of the energy-saving designs and based on facade technology using glass that is popular material in designs. This has been applied by numerous architects based on the studies mainly conducted in Europe.
However, the DSF system has many uncertainties since it causes complex thermal/fluid behaviors in its interaction with a constantly changing external environment. In addition, many conflicting views arise in terms of energy use and thermal comfort. The reason for this is that there is lack of monitoring data and no systematically organized results or design criteria on the possible application under a wide range of climates conditions of DSF.
Until now, many studies on the DSF systems have been conducted in Europe. The selection of passive strategy applicable to the improvement of building energy performance varies depending on the climatic condition of the target buildings. Thus, simply applying the European example is inappropriate in Korea?s climatic condition.
This study measured the actual behavior of multi-story DSF, which has hardly been done before in South Korea. The load characteristics of DSF buildings compared with Single skin facades(SSF) ones under weather conditions in Korea and the seasonal control strategies were suggested based on the simulation models verified through monitoring data. In addition, the research on the optimal design of DSF was carried out. The results of this study are as follows.
1) Simulations on the air flow rate and air/surface temperature within cavity and measured data were compared and verified. Relatively greater error occurred in the temperature of heating seasons dominated by air flow through the cracks with upper and lower openings of cavity closed, compared with that of intermediate and cooling seasons. Verification on the actual flow rate of 10 seconds and simulated flow rate by hours was conducted. From the result, the flow rate turned out to be in proportion to external irradiation and wind speed.
2) The DSF in heating seasons was negative to heating load due to cutting off solar radiation. However this was offset by heat transfer due to the greenhouse effect of cavity, and heating coil energy of 13% was reduced in comparison with SSF. In the case of DSF in intermediate and cooling seasons, the heat transfer due to the greenhouse effect of cavity was negative to cooling load. This was offset by the effect of cutting off solar radiation. The cooling coil energy of 1.9?2.1% was reduced in comparison with the SSF. On the other hand, the double-skin facade sometimes showed more disadvantageous results than those of SSF from July to August when the temperature of cavity rises to the maximum; however, its minimal difference had no significance.
3) The proposed model of the heating seasons utilizing cavity as pre-heating space of HVAC system reduced coil energy of 18.9%, compared with DSF model in which control strategies are not applied. The proposed model of the intermediate and cooling seasons utilized natural ventilation through the inflow air of cavity. Based on this, an amount of outdoor air to HVAC system is adjusted and reduced cooling energy of 7.5%, compared with a DSF model in which control strategies are not applied.
4) Optimization was conducted using 34 glass-type data, targeting the glass of outer layer, outside surface of inner layer and inside surface of inner layer. From the results, cooling energy increased by 25.1%, but heating and lighting energy decreased by 45.3% and 10.6% respectively, thereby contributing to a total of 10.85% energy reduction. Optimization on the width of cavity of 8 cm to 148 cm was conducted. From the results, cooling energy increased by 4.3%, but heating and lighting energy decreased by 5.6% and 6.72% respectively, thereby contributing to a total of 1.74% energy reduction.
