To operate nuclear power plant beyond design life, the integrity of power, instrument and control cables have to be maintained against cable degradations and electrical fires. A fire event occurred in cable zone often causes to serious electrical problems such as shorts, ground faults, or open circuits which may impact to the loss of safe shutdown capabilities performed by safety related systems and equipments in nuclear power plants. In order to prevent this situation, safety systems in nuclear power plants were designed with keeping a basic principle of redundancy and independency. Nevertheless, cable fire gives rise to spurious operation, wrong indication or make instrument unavailable which interrupt operators from performing their accident mitigation and proper judgement. After all, these component failures and operator mistakes cause to decrease plant capabilities of safe shutdown and lead plants to disastrous conditions. This study was performed in three parts ; cable characteristics investigation, cable degradation diagnosis and heat-flux evaluation for cable exposed to the fire. Most of electric cables of Korean nuclear power plants use thermoset as cable jacket material and the total number of cables is about 50,000 electric circuits. An extensive research tells that the insulation of 13.8 kV and 4.16 kV power cables could be degraded with a water tree and partial discharge failure under long term operation. To investigate the degradation mechanism of cables, the integrity of high electric power cable was diagnosed by using partial discharge detection method. The diagnosis results showed that a partial discharge pulse was not indicated at 12 MHz band by noise, but in case of 27 MHz band partial discharge pulse was discovered clearly. Through the analysis of frequency response characteristics of a partial discharge signal, the most suitable partial discharge signalling/noise (S/N) rate band was selected and the diagnose frequency band was determined. Six different kinds of cables were examined by using penlight experiment equipment to know heat flux and fire characteristics for cable exposed to the fire. Electrical performance and failure of cable were analyzed using the IRMS (Insulation resistance measurement system). The Penlight shroud temperature was initially set at 250℃ and increased in 25℃ increments every five minutes until ignition and cable insulation resistance decreased below 1,000 Ω. From the results of experiment, it was found that electrical failure of cable was occurred at temperature 400℃ to 600℃ and average heat-flux 12.3 kW/m2. This value was comparable to that used in American nuclear power plants, which has a value from 390℃ to 460℃. Through this study, the cables used in Korean nuclear power plant were confirmed in view of the excellence in fire resistance compared to IEEE 383 which represents the standard criteria of electrical failure temperature (330℃) and heat-flux (11 kW/m2). In addition, the cable performance in Korean nuclear plants was superior to that of CARLFIRE (Cable response to live fire) nuclear power plant in USA. Electrical performance and failure of cable were analyzed using SCDU (Surrogate circuit diagnostic unit) following IRMS experiments. These experiments were to determine the failure mode. The electrical failure at 420℃ to 450℃ was occurred by short circuit. The durations of first spurious actuation occurred between 1 second and 56 seconds with an average value of 24 seconds. Total time between the occurrence of the first spurious actuation and the power outage of the circuit was ranged from 12 seconds to 151 seconds. The major failure modes were identified as the spurious actuation-hot short (SA-HS) and fuse clear-short or ground (FC-SG). In conclusion, this study established a diagnostic methodology for cable degradation and evaluated the heat-flux of cable exposed to the fire of nuclear power plant. The results of this study contribute to the development of advanced technology for improving the safety and integrity of cables as well as provide base data of cable exposed to the fire characteristics in Korean nuclear power plants.
