Odor is one of the most unpleasant, frequently complaint-rousing factors of pollution around the world. It is now necessary to research and develop an alternative technology that could overcome the problems of the existing odor-control and VOC-eliminating techniques, such as the lack of efficiency, the difficulties of maintenance, and the rising costs. In order to help solve these problems, this study seeks to eliminate odors and VOCs using a dual alkaline-electrolytic packed tower. The device of concern is bench scale (42 S㎥/hr), which was installed in the back of a sewage sludge dryer which continuously generated odorous gases. The wash liquids used were NaOH solution for the alkali packed tower, and hypochlorous acid generated by electrolysis in the electrolytic packed tower. This study sought to identify the compounds at the root of odors, by both quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing the odors and VOCs generated by the sewage sludge dryer. The results of the analysis were then used to evaluate the likelihood of eliminating complex odors using the dual alkali-electrolytic packed tower, as well as to determine the densities of the NaOH and hypochlorous acid solutions required to eliminate such odors. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. The analysis of the compounds involved in the odorous gases generated by the sewage sludge dryer at Sewage Treatment Facility H revealed that hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptane accounted for 51% and 32% of all odorous gases respectively, for the combined total of 83%. Other compounds, including aldehyde compounds such as isovaleraldehyde, made up the remaining 16%. The removal of these compounds is expected to eliminate most of the odors generated in the facility. Using separate alkali and electrolytic packed towers succeeded in eliminating over 90% of all of the odors and VOCs. The electrolytic tower, however, was not capable of eliminating trimethylamine. The dual alkali-electrolytic packed tower, under proper conditions of operation, succeeded in eliminating over 95% of all odors and VOCs. Using the dual packed tower therefore requires lower concentrations of wash liquids than the existing system.
