The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of teacher’s interactions on the formation of mathematical concepts of infants at 2-year-old class applying the teacher’s interaction that promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities to infants at 2-year-old class and to let people recognize the importance of teacher’s interactions and the necessity of mathematical education for infants. For this purpose, the following research questions were set. First, do teacher’s interactions to promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities affect the formation of mathematical concepts of infants at 2-year-old class? Second, how do teacher’s interactions to promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities affect the sub-categories of mathematical concepts of infants at 2-year-old class? The subjects of the study were 42 infants (21 in Experiment Group and 21 Control Group) at 2-year-old class of 3 centers for children at workplace located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do and 6 teachers (3 in Experiment Group and 3 in Control Group) with similar level of education and career. To examine the formation of mathematical concepts, using Piaget’s test tool for the development of mathematical concepts, pre- and post-test were carried out for the infant subjects. To the Experiment Group, 16 activities of teacher’s interactions that promoted mathematical abilities in block-play activities were applied for about 9 weeks while to the Control Group, the same kinds of blocks and props as those of the Experiment Group were provided to examine the differences between them by getting only their voluntary explorations done. For an analysis on the research results, to examine the impacts of the teacher’s interactions to promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities, unpaired t-test were carried out to prove the differences in the resulting scores of the infants’ development of mathematical concepts between pre- and post-scores of the Experiment Group and Control Group and the differences in their scores in the sub-categories (categorization, number, space, measurement and order) of mathematical concepts between the pre- and post-scores of the two groups. To examine the research results; first, as a result of an application of block-play activities by the type of the teacher’s interactions for the promotion of mathematical abilities, the infants at 2-year-old class in the Experiment Group, for whom there were teacher’s interactions to promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities showed significant differences in their scores of mathematical concepts than those in the Control Group who had voluntary block-play activities did. Second, as a result of an application of the teacher’s interactions to promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities, there were significant differences also in the scores in categorization, number, space, measurement and order, the sub-categories of the formation of the mathematical concepts. Through the research results, teacher’s interaction to promote mathematical abilities in block-play activities turned out to affect infants’ formation of mathematical concepts. This study could suggest that the types of the teacher’s interactions for the promotion of mathematical abilities such as promoting, recognizing, changing directions, following, showing models, elaborating, giving information, co-construct and expanding affected their development of the mathematical concepts. Thus, teachers should provide with activities related to infants’ voluntary participation or activity topics in block-play activities, recognize the importance of mathematical education and train themselves with the interactions that can form their mathematical concepts. In addition, they should continue to provide them with educational experiences so that infants can form mathematical concepts in various non-formative experiences they experience in their lives, not stopping at their simply composing the blocks but internalizing mathematical concepts through mathematical communications with their teacher in the process of composition.
