The purpose of this study was to examine whether Gugak Jangdan (Korean classical music rhythm) would have the same or better therapeutic effects on children with autism spectrum disorders as or than general music therapy. It's specifically meant to provide Gugak Jangdan education for children with autism spectrum disorders in elementary school special classes in 20 sessions during a five-month period of time by using traditional percussion instruments such as Gwanggwari, JIng, Jangru and Buk to check the aspects of their change and the effect of Gugak Jangdan. This researcher has offered music therapy education for children with autism spectrum disorders and for children with intellectual disabilities since 2010 by utilizing Gugak Jangdan, and found that children with intellectual disabilities made progress in cognitive ability and sociability, and that children with autism spectrum disorders showed more attention behavior and less maladjusted behavior. There was especially a marked decrease in the latter's aggressiveness, and that experience served as an opportunity for this researcher to make a full-scale study of the treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders through Gukak Jangdan. Earlier studies were analyzed, and many researchers established that music could be one of effective treatment methods for children with autism spectrum disorders, and that it was effective to some extent. However, studies of music therapy by Gugak Jangdan were still in the rudimentary stage, though it was all Koreans who provided and received music therapy. That's the reason why this study attempted to prove the effectiveness of Gukak Jangdan as one of clinical music therapies geared toward children with autism spectrum disorders. Two research questions were posed to prove Gukak Jangdan to be as effective as general music therapy: 1. Do performing activities that use traditional percussion instruments and Gukak Jangdan have any impact on the attention behavior of children with autism spectrum disorders? 2. Do performing activities that use traditional percussion instruments and Gukak Jangdan have any impact on the maladjusted behavior of children with autism spectrum disorders? To address the research questions, intervention was provided in each session, and a quantitative analysis was made to record the aspects of change in the selected children in the treatment process of Gukak Jangdan. The CARS rating scale that was most widely used in diagnosis and evaluation of autism was employed to figure out the changes of the children in the treatment process of Gukak Jangdan. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the performing activities that utilized Gukak Jangdan and traditional percussion instruments were effective at improving the attention behavior of the children with autism spectrum disorders. They showed more attention behavior, and they gradually got to engage in the activities more actively. Second, the performing activities that utilized Gukak Jangdan and traditional percussion instruments were effective at improving the maladjusted behavior of the children with autism spectrum disorders. The children showed less aggressive behavior or less hyperactivities as the program went on. The above-mentioned findings confirmed that music therapy by Gukak Jangdan could produce the same effect as general music therapy or produce better effects than that. This study is expected to pave the way for systematic research on music therapy by Gukak Jangdan to prove its effect on children with disabilities involving autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities, and to be of use for the selection of treatment and treatment methods tailored to their individual variances.
