The purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of divorced families and provide the basis for social and educational support policies by closely examining the child-raising process experienced by parents of infants and toddlers in divorced families. This study answers the questions: ‘What are the factors associated with the child-raising process in divorced families?’ and ‘What models can explain the child-raising process in divorced families?’This study used the Grounded Theory Method developed by Strauss and Corbin (1988) as a research method. The participants of the study included a total of fourteen single parents - seven mothers and seven fathers – who are raising infants or toddlers alone after divorce and are considered to have expressed their opinions freely and frankly. Information was collected through in-depth interviews with the participants and analyzed according to the three stages of the analytic method of the Grounded Theory. The open coding stage included ‘categorization of child-raising process of divorced families.’ In the axial coding, category analysis and process analysis was performed based on the paradigm according to ‘construction of child-raising process of divorced families.’ The selective coding stage, ‘hypothesis suggestion and type deduction’, defined a core category, developed a storyline, performed hypothesis stereotyping and relationship statements, and conducted type analysis. Finally, the study provided a ‘situational model for child-raising process of divorced families.’ ‘Categorization of child-raising process of divorced families’ generated 104 concepts, 33 sub categories, and 15 categories. The ‘family re-construction’ category was the causal condition that was responsible for the centralphenomenon and the central phenomenon was ‘chaos and burden.’ Contextual condition that influences the central phenomenon was ‘compatible attitude,’ ‘negative mood,’ and ‘bias and conflict.’ Thearbitrational condition turned out to be ‘support system’ and ‘burden for living.’ The action/interaction strategy,an intentional strategy, turned out to be ‘changing the way of thinking,’ ‘confirmation of commitment,’ ‘providing alternatives,’ and ‘challenging,’ and the corresponding results were ‘self –led type,’ ‘interdependent type,’ ‘obsessed with children type,’ and ‘inter-cooperative type.’ For ‘construction of child-raising process of divorced families,’ category analysis and process analysis were conducted based on the paradigm. Category analysis was first performedto reconstruct the decomposed materials in order to explain the phenomenon more accurately and to connect them with sub-categories according to the categories’ character and level. Based on this, child-raising process of divorced families wasdivided into five stages; ‘despair stage,’ ‘conflict stage,’ ‘re-formulation stage,’ ‘challenge stage,’ and ‘hope stage.’ ‘Despair stage’ is where a parent decidesdivorce, starts raising children alone because the conflict between the couple is considered insurmountable, and falls into despair. ‘Conflict stage’ brings changes in children’s behavior due to the divorce of parents and conflict rises from changes in the spouse’s attitude and the caregiver’s environment. ‘Re-formulation stage’ is where participants re-formulate theirrole after divorce by establishing the role of the head of household, making a good environment for raising children and improving their relationship with the children. At the ‘challenge stage,’ the participants put themselves together, regain stability, and recognize self esteem as a valuable member of the family and society as opposed to viewing themselves as a loser in life. ‘Hope stage’ means the participants cherish hope for the bright future, overcome chaos and burdens, and go forward with hope. The participants were pursuing their hopes and dreams while solving the challenges of raising children by themselves. ‘Hypothesis suggestion and type deduction’ is the process of deriving the core category and connecting with other categories to generate a new type of theory. The core category of this study is ‘overcoming chaos and burdens, and going forward toward hope.’ This study consolidated the entire process putting the core category at its center, confirmed its relevance, and developed a storyline. It conducted ‘hypothesis stereotyping and relationship statements’ by stereotyping the relationships between the core category and other categories in order to derive types. Based on this, the relevance among categories were continuously confirmed and four types, ‘self-led,’ ‘obsessed with children,’ ‘inter-dependent,’ and ‘inter-cooperative’ were derived. The ‘self-led type’ thinks they cannot live freely because of children and acts as an instructive and authoritative parentin the child-raising process. The ‘obsessed with children type’ thinks they live only for their children rather than for themselves and believes they can do anything for their children. The ‘inter-independent type’is very active in self-examination and mind control but very passive in providing alternatives and challenging. This type shares many things with their children, maintains close relationships with their children, and has an inter-dependent parenting style. The ‘inter-cooperative type’ lives an active life with the positive thinking that they will seek countermeasures by consulting and cooperating with their children in finding solutions and practicing the solutions in their everyday lives. A situational model for the child-raising process of divorced families was derived based on the three analytical steps of the Grounded Theory. The model was presented by consolidating situational conditions and an action/interaction strategy, as well as the relationship with the result at the individual, family, societal and national level. This study reveals that the child-raising process of divorced families goes through the process of ‘overcoming chaos and burdens and going forward toward hope’ and is connected with and influenced by individuals, families, society, and the nation. The study concludes that not only individual efforts, but also societal and national efforts need to be made to establish a diverse and effective support system.
