There is a major worldwide energy crisis that is evident from the skyrocketing prices of oil, emissions of greenhouse gases, and exhaustion of fossil fuels. This has increased the global interest in alternative energy sources. Recently, cellulosic biomass, including starch- and sugar-based raw materials, has received attention as a source of ethanol. Ethanol can be obtained from sugars contained in the cellulosic biomass. However, it is difficult to release these sugars, and the process of releasing the sugars produces by-products that inhibit fermentation; further, some sugars present in the cellulosic biomass are difficult to ferment. Due to the abovementioned reasons, cellulosic ethanol production is a complicated and expensive process. Therefore, for efficient ethanol production, a material with low contents of lignin and hemicellulose and high content of cellulose should be selected. To achieve efficient ethanol production, we determined the differences in the contents of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose in miscanthus plants, and estimated their typical cellulosic biomass, by different species, collection sites, extraction parts, and harvest time. To facilitate the estimation, the extractive components of raw materials were removed. Among the 3 species studied, Miscanthus sacchariflorus had the lowest average lignin content, and the miscanthus from Seogwipo Andeokmyeon had especially low content of lignin. Further, leaves tended to have more lignin content than stems, and the lignin content decreased after flowering. Among the samples, the Hoengseong Dunnae leaf, before flowering (HDLB) had the highest content of lignin (29.61%), whereas the Inje Bangdongri leaf, after flowering (IBLA) had the lowest content of lignin (6.73%). The cellulose content did not vary distinctly in the species. The miscanthus from India had the highest content of cellulose, and stems had more content of cellulose than leaves. Further, cellulose content tended to decrease after flowering. Illinois stem, after flowering (INSA) had the highest content of cellulose (44.1%), and Iowa stem, after flowering (ISA) had the lowest content of cellulose (23.92%). Finally, the hemicellulose content was the lowest in M. x giganteus, similar to that of M. sinensis. Miscanthus from Iowa had the lowest content of hemicellulose. The hemicellulose content was higher in stems than in leaves, and it generally increased after flowering. Moreover, the content of hemicellulose was found to be the greatest in Seogwipo Soengsaneup stem, after flowering (SSSA, 31.28%), whereas India stem, before flowering (IDSB) had the lowest content of hemicellulose (16.30%).
