The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between children's perceived parental psychological control and children's self esteem, and the mediating role of children's maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism. The participants were 423 5th and 6th elementary school students in Daegu and Kyungpook area. Three kinds of scales for parental psychological control, maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism, and self-esteem were administered. The results of this study were as follows. First, boys perceived parental psychological control higher than girls. Maternal psychological control was perceived significantly higher than paternal psychological control. Second, children showed lower levels of self-esteem as they perceived parental psychological control higher. Third, children showed higher levels of maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism as they perceived parental psychological control higher. Fourth, children showed lower levels of self-esteem as they showed higher level of maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism. Fifth, children's maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism displayed a significant mediating role in the relationships between children's perceived paternal psychological control and children's self-esteem. That is, as children perceived paternal psychological control higher, they showed higher level of maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism that, in turn, would decrease children's self-esteem. These results indicated that children's perceived parental psychological control affected children's low self-esteem and children's maladaptive self-oriented perfectionism played a mediating role in this process. Therefore, parental psychological control is a sublated parenting type to help children's healthy psychological development.
