This study examines how these two persons - Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler - came to come across theatricals and training methods that they highly regarded respectively. Although both were affected by Stanislavski, Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler preferred different acting training methods, and this study compares those based on the acting of ‘Marlon Brando.’ The system of Stanislavski is regarded as the basic training method for actors. Having affected by this system, Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler went through acting training with different training methods that they considered as important in their respective styles. The two prominent persons in the circle of American dramatic performance, Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler, had different views with regard to important factors in acting, and thus had different training methods. Lee Strasberg regarded as vital the emotional memory training method centering on the inner development of an actor, which was the initial system of Stanislavski. The emotional memory training is based on the feelings for past experiences of the actor, and the memory should be lasted for 7 years. On the other hand, Stella Addler showed interests in the physical behavior logic, the latter system of Stanislavski, unlike other comtemporary researchers. Stella Addler met him in person and agreed that a lot of imagination that was free from self-consciousness counted. These two had different views on training methods, and thus this study compares their training methods based on the acting of Marlon Brando, the actor who was affected by Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler. It is known that Marlon Brando learned acting at Actors' Studio with the training methods of Lee Strasberg. However, the research does not agree with this. Although it is true that Marlon Brando used some of the training methods of Lee Strasberg, he mainly used the training methods of Stella Addler. Marlon Brando had help from Stella Addler not only in acting training but also in ordinary days. He learned acting with her training methods, and the training helped him to develop acting skills. The emotional memory training of Lee Strasberg, which uses feelings in the actor's past experiences, may bring in emotional changes to actors, and it seems to have limitations since it is based on the actors' experiences. On the other hand, the imagination training of Stella Addler helps learners embody a character based on imagination with no limit, which may result in effects more than expected in creating a character. To comparatively examine the acting training methods of Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler, this study investigate the acting training of the two, and compare the training methods that the two regarded as important respectively. As a result, it turned out that Stella Addler presented training methods that she thought of and studied in an actor's perspective. The researcher believes that Stella Addler's training method that draws up actors' behaviors from imagination based on the given environments is quite an appropriate training process in creating characters. These two regarded as most important the work of actors in performance, emphasizing sincere expressions. Although they preferred different training methods, those methods are essential for actors. Making good use of the training methods of the two according to the situations will be of great help for actors. Although the researcher desired to proceed with more thorough investigation on the training process of Lee Strasberg and Stella Addler, the resources available were limited. Especially regarding Stella Addler, not only the information on her but also materials on her training methods were insufficient. It is hoped that the study on Stella Addler and her training methods continues and contributes to acting training.
