The aim of this study is to find out receptive vocabulary abilities which were categorized by parts of speech including nouns, verbs, and adjectives and to compare children with intellectual disability to normal controls. For this, differences of receptive vocabulary skills between the two groups were examined. In addition to this, its abilities between the groups were also classified by age 4, 5, and 6 to observe differences depending on age. Each group includes 9 children aged 4 through 6 years with intellectual disability and average intelligence respectively. These children in two groups performed the test to get evaluated for receptive vocabulary abilities which were tested by using nouns, verbs, and adjectives. A percentage of correct answers and the standard deviation of the vocabulary comprehension test were calculated and statistics were complied and proved by t-test to compare its abilities between two groups. The meaningful results from this study were as follow: First of all, the disabled group showed lower receptive vocabulary abilities than normal controls in three parts of speech; nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Noun vocabulary comprehension abilities were considered to be the highest followed by verbs and adjectives respectively among intellectually disabled children. However, there is no major difference in noun and verb vocabulary comprehension skills among normal controls although that of adjectives was relatively lower than the other parts of speech. Secondly, the groups divided by age 4 through 6 years showed that every age group with intellectual disabilities has lower receptive vocabulary abilities in all three parts of speech than normal one (noun, verb, and adjective are in order.) On the other hand, 4 and 5 years old children with average intelligence has no reliable difference in noun and verb vocabulary comprehension skills but verb vocabulary showed slightly higher than nouns in children at age 6. In other words, the study revealed the older children with average intelligence are the more its abilities expand. In particular, adjective vocabulary comprehension abilities in the disabled group were significantly lower than normal one. Thus, verbs describing actions and adjectives containing abstraction were less receptive than nouns indicating specific properties. Adjective vocabulary comprehension skills in all age groups with intellectual disability had two times through four times lower than normal controls when comparing these two groups. The reasons why intellectually challenged children have lower receptive vocabulary abilities in verbs and adjectives than in nouns may be that their low intellectual abilities cause them to have a remarkable lack of linguistic stimulation, social experiences, and social interaction when comparing it with children with average intelligence. This study indicates that it will be very helpful if speech pathologist provides a lot of verbs and adjectives for children with intellectual disability undergoing speech therapy to offer them more linguistic experiences.
