Naming ability plays an important role in various situations including natural communication. Any problem in naming object can cause difficulty in use of language and communication. Therefore naming ability is the indicator of whether there is a language problem or not. The purpose of this study is to obtain empirical data of naming ability in 4 to 6-year-old normally developing children. This study is focused on two categories of words: noun and verb. In this study, naming accuracy, error type and priming effect were measured and analysed. The subject groups consisted of 20 4-year-old children and 20 6-year-old children. All participants named 60 nouns and 60 verbs while black and white line drawing pictures were presented. If a subject showed error response at first trial, then semantic and phonological primes were given. The results are as follow: 1) The frequency of correct responses of 6-year-old children was significantly higher than that of 4-year-old children. And there was no significant difference between the frequency of correct responses of noun and verb in 6-year-old children. However, the frequency of correct responses of verb in 4-year-old children was significantly higher than that of noun. 2 ) Error types were semantic, visual, phonological and not related, And semantic error was the most frequent of all types of noun-naming errors, followed by not related, visual phonological errors. 4-year-old children and 6-year-old children showed similar error pattern on noun-naming. Except for the difference between semantic and not related type, differences among error types were all significant. The error pattern for verb was same as error pattern in noun. But differences among semantic, not related, visual error were not significant. 3) The increased rate of correct responses in primed condition of 6-year-old children was significantly higher than that of 4-year-old children. And the increased rate of verbs was higher than that of nouns. These results suggest that naming ability develops as children get mature. And they showed more semantically-related error than error that is not related to the target word. Regardless of word type, the performance of 6-year-old children was more improved than that of 4 year-old children when primes were given in naming accuracy, It seems that 6 year-old children who have higher language ability can relate prime to the target word well.
