The objectives of this study were to investigate Korean adults?f oral health state using the data of the Korea National Oral Health Survey in 2003 and 2006, to propose oral health policies, and ultimately to contribute to Korean adults?f oral health management. For these purposes, we analyzed data from the Korea National Oral Health Survey in 2003 and 2006.
Data were processed with SPSS 18.0, and frequency analysis was performed in order to examine socio?]demographic characteristics, oral diseases, the need of dental care, the need of dental prosthesis, oral health behavior, etc. In addition, logistic regression analysis was performed in order to analyze how oral health state is influenced by general characteristics and oral health behavior.
According to the results of this study, first, the prevalence of dental caries was statistically significantly correlated with gender, age and education level but not with area of residence among the socio?]demographic characteristics in 2003 and 2006, and only with smoking among oral health behaviors.
Second, the prevalence of periodontal disease was significantly correlated with all of socio?]demographic characteristics, and with daily tooth brushing frequency, the use of oral hygiene products and smoking among oral health behaviors.
Third, the need of dental care was significantly correlated with gender, age and education level in 2003, but only with gender and area of residence in 2006. Among oral health behaviors, daily tooth brushing frequency and smoking were significantly in both 2003 and 2006.
Fourth, the need of dental prosthesis was statistically significantly correlated with socio?]demographic and economic characteristics and with oral health behaviors.
The results of this study as presented above suggest that, considering inactive oral health management for adults aged over 18 in Korea, it is necessary to develop oral health education programs and apply them to Korea adults in communities, workplaces, etc. using effective education media and methods for Korean adults?f continuous oral health management.
