In order to establish the role of nutritionists in silver towns and emphasize the necessity of allocation of dietitian in silver town, this study conducted a multilateral questionnaire survey toward ordinary people as potential buyers of silver towns, administrators and senior citizens living in silver towns and analyzed the results. The results are as follows: 1. The first questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the need for a nutritional care service in silver town and identify awareness of the role of a dietitian in silver town using a structured questionnaire. The subjects consisted of 466 ordinary people(216 males, 250 females), aged 20-59 years, in the Gyeongnam area. Although most of the subjects were aware of silver town and felt a necessity for it, only 24.9% of the subjects intended to live in silver town, whereas 55.6% of the respondents replied that they did not know whether they lived in silver town. Results on the importance of services offered in silver town indicated that medical service facilities, the interior and mood of silver town, the reliability of management, and meal service prepared by a dietitian were prioritized. Healthy food was the most valuable part of the meal service followed by taste. In total, 88.3% of the subjects answered that the meal service in silver town should be supervised by a dietitian. Clinical nutrition management was chosen as the most important job of the dietitian followed by sanitation management. 2. The second questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the need for dietitian role with the managers in nursing homes and elderly welfare housing facilities. Among the surveyed 19 places, 16 were paid nursing homes, in which 42.1% of the respondent managers reported that their income is greater than expenditure. 84.2% reported that they were running a restaurant for the facility residents. 35.3% reported that a dietitian managed the restaurant; 29.4% reported facility manager managed it; 25.4% reported the chief cook managed it. With respect to the regulation for appointment of dietitian, 63.2% of the respondents reported that they absolutely needed a dietitian. However, 63.2% reported that they did not hire a dietitian, whereas 31.6% hired. As the reasons for the need of a dietitian, nutrition and health were the primary reasons. They regarded menu plan as most important. When they hire a dietitian, 57.9% reported that past experience was not required for job qualification. The licenses or certificates except the dietitian certificate which the dietitian is required to hold for the job qualification most frequently was the cook certificate (42.1%). 3. The third questionnaire survey was conducted to examine the health and nutritional status of the elderly in 3 silver towns with or without a dietitian. In case of the institution without a dietitian, the response indicating bad health status were dominant, and they were suffering from cardiovascular disease, rheumatic disease and diabetes. The elderly in the institution with a dietitian showed that they take regular medical healthy check more frequently and have better chewing function. They also responded that they regulary exercise and have higher satisfaction with meal supply. The results from nutritional status the elderly in the institution with a dietitian showed better nutritional status. NAR of the elderly in the institute without a dietitian was lower than the elderly in the institute without a dietitian. In particular, the elderly in the institute without a dietician were lower in all nutrients except those with less than 0.75 such as calcium, vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin A, folic acid and vitamin E. In particular, they were far below 0.75 in calcium, vitamin C and folic acid. This study was intended to identify the demand of the to-be-elderly adults for meal service and dietitian role in silver town and the needs of the managers in elderly welfare facilities for dietitian.
