The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of horse-riding simulator exercise for the prevention of falls in the frail elderly people. 32 subjects in H-hospital were randomly divided equally into two group, swiss ball exercise group and horse-riding simulator exercise group. each group carried out their 20 minutes exercise five times a week for 8 weeks. FRT, LOS, length(cm) and average speed(cm/s) of COP movement during Rhomberg were measured for evaluation of static balance ability in subjects. TUG, 10MWT were measured for dynamic balance ability and electromyography was measured to investigate the trunk muscle activity during gait. The results were as follow. 1. There were significant differences between pre-test and post-test of FRT, LOS, length and average speed of COP movement which were static balance scales in both swiss ball exercise group and horse-riding simulator exercise group (p<.05). The static balance scales of control and horse-riding simulator exercise groups between pre-test and post-test such as FRT, LOS and COP traveling length(cm) and average speed(cm/s) during Rhomberg, were significantly different in measures (p<.05). 2. There were significant differences between pre-test and post-test of TUG, 10MWT which were dynamic balance sclaes in both two groups (p<.05). The dynamic balance scales of control and horse-riding simulator exercise groups between pre-test and post-test such as TUG and 10MWT, were significantly different in measures (p<.05). 3. There is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test of trunk muscle activity during gait in both two groups (p<.05). The trunk muscle activities during gait of control and horse-riding simulator exercise groups between pre-test and post-test were significantly different in measures (p<.05). These results show that both swiss ball exercise and horse-riding simulator exercise can improve the balance ability of elderly people. This suggests that horse-riding simulator exercise can be a effective way to prevent falls and to improve the balance ability in elderly people. These findings revealed that horse-riding simulator exercise was effective on balancing ability of elderly people so that these exercises can be new alternatives for the prevention of falls in the frail elderly people.
