Cathode materials of 0.3Li2MnO3∙0.7LiMn1-xNix-0.1Co0.1O2 (x = 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5) for lithium ion battery had been prepared by co-precipitation method. The electronic and local atomic structural characterization of prepared materials were performed by in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy on Mn, Ni and Co K-edges. Ni K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra show that the Ni oxidation state is oxidized from Ni2+ to Ni4+ upon charging, and then the Ni oxidation state is recovered oppositely during discharging. On the other hands, the Mn and Co oxidation state remain unchanged during charging/discharging process for Mn and Co K-edge XANES. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra were shown changes of the local atomic structure near Mn, Ni and Co during delithiation/lithiation. 7Li magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) had been used to study local environments of lithium, which is surrounding by transition metal electronic structures in cathode materials. In this study, the resonances peaks of to different lithium local environments were assigned by comparing the local structures in 0.3Li2MnO3∙0.7LiMn1-xNix-0.1Co0.1O2 (x = 0.2, 0.3). Also, LiFe0.4Mn0.6PO4 has been characterized by using ex situ 7Li MAS NMR during the first charge process. The single isotropic 7Li resonance has been observed for LiFe0.4Mn0.6PO4. The MAS isotropic peak has been shifted from 0 ppm to downfield by delithiation. The isotropic peak is ccompanied by a large and asymmetric spinning sideband manifold, arising from the paramagnetic interaction between the lithium nucleus and transition metal unpaired electrons.
