An ever-changing environment, and the buildings in such an environment have been perceived as having limitations in determining the forms and space of architecture with existing concepts and logic. Considerable effort has been put into overcoming such limitations and constructing a new system of expression. One such effort consists in introducing the possibility of flexible and fluid concepts and in constructing architectural works that have the characteristics of fluid expressions. Accordingly, this study attempted to investigate the meaning of architecture from fluid characteristics to enhance the understanding of fluidity by investigating and analyzing fluid architecture from a new perspective, rather than by customary design methods. Furthermore, this study investigated experimental works which used distorted geometry and nonlinear characteristics. The appearance of fluid architecture destroyed pure geometry and typology. In particular, this study selected Zaha Hadid's architectural work, which represents an attempt to describe a modern world through a new structure from a new viewpoint by using elements with fluid characteristics. Among her works, this study chose her first architectural work, Maxxi, which attempted to create fluid space and adaptive space in harmony with flexible curves and sharp angles. This study investigated fluidity through Bergson's "le concept fluide" in order to understand the nature of movement and to respond to change. The nature of change can be classified into the property that appears to be moving; the property that is moving; and the property that changes according to the movement of an observer. At the same time, this study attempted to derive fluid expression characteristics by applying fluid characteristics to a two-dimensional plane, an architectural relationship within an urban context, spatial composition, and three-dimensional composition, which were expressed in the process of integrating visual, formative, and technical parts; and by using Zaha Hadid's creative formatization, genetic elements, and curves. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, lightness and explosion express semi-gravity characteristics by combining mass and column, mass and mass, and mass and empty space. Second, dynamic and skewed geometry express tense and dynamic characteristics by using dissimilar axes. Third, a non-linear and fluid form of space and compression expresses external fluidity by applying volume to the non-linear flow, which occurs in the urban context. The element of non-linearity shows lines, which bend in varying angles, except for a right angle, as well as lines that repeat tension and relaxation. Fourth, in a space with a continuous, changeable, and fluid form, a continuous space, which becomes one organism, was formed freely through the hall and stairs, which were used to remove shocks and interpenetration of the tunnel-type mass. This will express a changeability that can flexibly respond to various demands. Fifth, at the boundary with the interpenetration property, flows, which occur in the urban context, express the area where interpenetration occurs, along with the two-dimensional plane and three-dimensional plane, and space. Through this, this study suggests new boundaries between a surrounding context and buildings, buildings and humans, and humans and a surrounding context. Sixth, in the aspects of interactivity and landscape, landscape was developed into an urban environment by placing weight on the interaction between a surrounding context and buildings, building and humans, and humans and a surrounding context. Bending lines occur by melting themselves into the surrounding context. Seventh, in the diversity and condensed collages, a two-dimensional urban context was applied to the three-dimensional space by attempting vertical overlapping and by collaging the flow of a surrounding context in order to accommodate complex and diverse flows and demands. This study analyzed the characteristics of the fluid spatial concept and its expression using a new expression system and a new spatial concept, which involves time. Through this, the contradictions and limitations of the customary expression system, which used to be determined by human intuition, could be overcome. In the future, creative designs will serve as a foundation for understanding architecture with limitless development potential.
