A Life Course of Crisis, Despair and Conquest in H. Hesse’s 『Demian』: Based on the Perspective of Literary Counseling원문보기

The purpose of this study was to examine a life course of crisis, despair and conquest depicted in “Demian”, a bestseller of German novelist Hermann Hesse (1877~1962) as a part of attempts to understand such crisis of people as experienced diversely in reality of our life, so that it could find out what the experiences of crisis and despair signify in the existence of human being, and could explore potential implications of world experience shown in the course of conquest from the perspective of literary counseling. Who I think I am means me in daily routine of life. However, we are likely to question who I think I am when we face a crisis of life. In a surge of unexpected and sudden crisis, anyone of us face a question about ‘who I am really’ once in a while. This study starts from an idea that crisis is not simply pain, anxiety or despair which we have to avoid and remove. Furthermore, it sought to find out answers to a question about how we should understand a crisis and should reflect such critical experiences in our life, if the crisis is inevitable and irradicable in our life. In order to achieve the above purposes, this study suggested possible implications of literary works from the perspective of counseling. Literary works have an implication of temporal re-experience in that they are helpful to correct such memory of past as distorted under the pressure of present and make a new construction of present. On the other hand, literary works have an implication of emotional re-experience in that they are helpful to reveal and accept one’s bias toward something, reduce potential influence of such bias and clearly recognize one’s emotions and problems. Furthermore, literary works have an implication in that they can be useful to extend the sphere of a new comprehension about contradiction and distress of people as existential being, and empirical knowledge becomes a life in itself via literature. Based on the utilities of literature, the literary counseling aims to help clients to newly interpret their own history, restore a forgotten story about them, face up to their hidden emotions and contradictions, find out their own natural being, believe their own intuition and achieve a precious moment of their positive life. In details, in order to examine a life course of crisis, despair and conquest depicted in “Demian”, this study focused on analyzing ‘two worlds - brightness and darkness’, exploring into a personal world of Sinclair, and breaking down the whole plot of “Demian” broadly into 4 segments such as impending crisis from outside, encounter with Demian, escape (from crisis) and despair, and awakening, so that it could analyze how Sinclair could reach his own self via interactions with major characters appearing in this work. Moreover, this study focused on various friendships which help Sinclair to meet with his own inner world, so that it could carefully consider relationships between counselor and client as well as possible roles of counselor. Based on these analyses, we found that the crises faced by Sinclair, the protagonist of “Demian”, involve relationships with others, encounter beyond despair, and the amplification and conquest of crises with a life course of experiences. Crises in life allow us to experience our own existence freely from any kind of falsehood and face the bounds of our own existence. Therefore, it was found that resolution of existential pain in crisis is a matter of fear and hardship but helps us to concentrate on our own self, and becomes a great opportunity to find out such implication of our own life as assigned to us and reveal how we could behave in relationships with others via crisis. Hence, this study sought to suggest that getting over a crisis has an implication of passing through the crisis itself, not removing it, and literary counseling can play a role in leading a course of breakthrough in client’s position.
