This study aims to present the semantic function system of postpositional particles, ‘은/는’ and/or ‘이/가’ ...

Learners of all levels - from beginner to intermediate and advanced - have difficulty in selecting one appropriate postpositional particle among ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ during a conversation. Furthermore, it is a common sense that as learners are in higher levels, more errors are reduced or improved, but some researchers showed that the replacement errors of ‘은/는’ vs ‘이/가’ were not reduced but rather increased. This means that the sentence structure containing ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ becomes more complex and ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ are realized with various semantic functions in a sentence, in the intermediate and advanced levels. Actually, ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ have a variety of semantic function. Thus, it is not easy for foreign learners with no intuition toward Korean language to use ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ by accurately recognizing various semantic function in a situation. Despite the fact that there have been many researches that tried to solve this problem, ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ problems were not well resolved, for many existing researches tried to solve problems with sentence approach, with the exclusion of discourse situation. As ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ are always combined with speech situations, it does not make sense to talk about controversy with the exclusion of speech situations. Also, it is not that learners don't know about ‘subject’ or ‘contrast’, and more than that, it is more important to know in which situation ‘subject’ or ‘contrast’ is used. In this study, the body is constructed in the following orders. Chapter 1 describes research objectives and needs, subjects and methods of ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가.’ It also reviews previous studies to see how ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ have been studied in Korean Language education or what studies have been conducted. Chapter 2 presents the semantic function system of ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가.’ Many studies have presented terms to explain about ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ in various ways. In this respect, this study presents semantic function that learners must know from the perspective of Korean language education and demonstrates whether it is appropriate or not. Chapter 3 shows in which situations a particular semantic function of ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ is actually used. Chapter 4 uses ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ in a class and analyzes pre-class test results. It is difficult to see the semantic function of ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ presented in this study as being perfect, but ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ problems can't be solved only with the method that learners ask or researchers explain about with which semantic function ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ are used in a sentence when a particular sentence is presented. A solution to this is 'situational model.' If typical and exemplary speech situations are found and practiced when ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ are used in a particular semantic function, ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ errors shown in learners will be solved. However, it is not easy to present typical and exemplary speech situations where particular semantic function of ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ are used, as a matter of fact. To make it possible to make a concise description for this, it should be limited to a situation. Because there are various answers from the same situation. Although not specifically provided in this study, fixed and limited situations where ‘은/는’ and ‘이/가’ are used, if possible, can be extracted to set up a upper category.
