Domestic wastewater treatment plants have been depending on biological treatment mechanism to remove total phosphorus. However, supplementary phosphorus treatment facility using chemical addition should be required almost all of WWTPs to meet enhanced total phosphorus effluent standards.
Nowadays most of WWTPs in Korea was using Al-coagulant that aluminum sulfate(Alum) or poly aluminum chloride(PAC). Al-coagulant is combined not only phosphate but organic, OH- to produce unsoluble sludge therefore Al-coagulant addition should be more required. Dosing of non-optimal coagulant makes several problems that residual aluminum, increasing chemical cost, producing non-precipitation floc and substantial amount of additional sludge.
This study conducted Jar-Test and Pilot-Test using WWTPs effluents for optimal coagulants addition and producing precipitable floc to removal phosphorus by different amount of coagulant dosing.
In case of same coagulant increased coagulation efficiency in proportion to coagulant addition mole ratio, amount of coagulant dosing is optimized 4mole ratio.
Additionally, this study conducted Alum and PAC co-dosing test and microsand and polymer co-dosing test. As a result, in case of Alum and PAC co-dosing increased coagulation efficiency in proportion to single coagulant addition, and dosing coagulant aids such as microsand and polymer increased settling performance.
The value of EI is for fulfilling both economic effects and efficiencies simultaneously by factorial design. It is computed by multiplying the removed concentration of T-P by the cost of coagulant usage. As a result the mixture injection of 1 mol of Alum with 2 mol of PAC is figured out.
This study suggests optimal coagulant type and amount of dose through Jar-Test and Pilot-Test of already operated WWTPs secondary clarifier effluents. This result contributes to efficient operation of WWTPs by enhanced total phosphorus effluent standards.
