Conventional BNR process is unable to meet discharging water quality standards and can not deal with nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus perfectly. At this point the introduction of MBR process has come to the fore as an alternate to resolve these problems, and a lot of studies have been conducted to apply membrane process to biological treatment of wastewater.
Though MBR process has many advantages, the greatest risk factors in operating MBR process are occurrence of membrane fouling and decrease of flux. Sustaining operations without efficient methods of back flushing can lead to shortening of membrane life and increase of maintenance cost. It is very difficult to find exact mechanism due to complex influence by many effects, although there have been recently many studies of membrane fouling.
The purposes of this study are firstly evaluating bioreactor of lab-scale and micro-filtration hollow fiber membrane, secondly investigating correlation between foulants affecting membrane performance and membrane fouling, and lastly evaluating various parameters affecting fouling and applicability of membrane fouling reducer.
As the analysis of influent and effluent quality, average removal efficiencies of CODcr, T-N, T-P were 95.8%, 71.9%, 60.1% respectively. Also, critical flux was determined by flux-step method. After 140 minutes, TMP was increasing rapidly and showed 0.32bar and the average of flux was 88LMH. EPS concentration decreased as increasing MLSS concentration. Especially, EPS concentration tends not to change much above MLSS concentration (6,000mg/L). However, EPS concentration variation is wide below MLSS concentration (6,000mg/L).
From results of membrane surface condition and element analysis using SEM/EDX, carbon and fluorine were founded to be the highest percentage in membrane because of characteristics of membrane material. In operating continuously, inorganic fouling was generated by increase of these inorganic substances such as Al3+ and Mg2+.
From results of particle size, zeta potential, SCODcr, EPS and MLSS concentration in order to analysis of effects of MFR addition on mixed liquor properties, the best filtration performance was obtained for 0.03mg MFR/mg MLSS and the addition of MFR to the reactor could not affect on microbial activity. When optimal MFR dosage was added, MFR, cationic polymer made particle flocs larger and these flocs could reduce membrane fouling since they could prevent permeation into membrane pore. Flux increase was likely a result of floc size enhancement.
