Critical assessment of economically viable renewable energy source is essential for the development of a globally sustainable society. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) offer a viable alternative to traditional silicon and thin film photovoltaic (PV) technologies owing to their potential low cost and facile manufacturing. We report the successful application of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as electrocatalysts for tri-iodide reduction in a DSSC. For the purpose of improving the performance of DSSCs using MWCNTs particle, the present work was investigated to get the optimum coating condition on a counter electrode. Three different structures namely: raw, just purified, purified and ground of MWCNTs were investigated as an alternative for platinum in counter-electrodes for DSSCs. The counter electrodes were prepared on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates by two different techniques: spin coating technique from fluid type and screen printing technique from paste type of that of the MWCNTs. Besides applying on the dye-sensitized solar cells, the current paper presents a new approach of attaining the optimum grinding condition of a planetary ball mill (PBM) and simple method for purifying MWCNTs to investigate the dispersion and thermal characteristics. This work was conducted under wet grinding conditions at various rotation speeds (300 rpm – 600 rpm). As a result, the structures of the amorphous carbon and carbon particles of the raw MWCNTs were eliminated and the tips of the nanotubes opened by purification. The particle size analyzer reveals that the agglomerated size of ground particles at rotation speed of 300 rpm was 69.183 µm. Nevertheless, the agglomerated size of particles significantly decreased to 13.183 µm after grinding at rotation speed of 600 rpm. The maximum absorbance (4.0 abs at wavelength of 300 nm) and highest thermal conductivity (0.6926 W*m-1k-1, at 40oC) of the suspension corresponds to the grinding speed of 600 rpm assisted by ultrasonication. In case of PV efficiency of DSSCs, by utilizing the spin coating technique, DSSCs fabricated with purified and ground MWCNTs counter electrode achieved an overall PV efficiency of 4.94 %. This PV performance is comparable to that of the DSSCs using spin coated Pt counter electrode fabricated in the same conditions. We found that the grinding method with high rotation speed plays can be significantly increased both the dispersibility and thermal conductivity of MWCNTs suspension, resulting in an increased photovoltaic efficiency of DSSCs.
