The purpose of this study was to examine the pathway that mothers' personality , parenting behavior, preschooler's emotional regulation affect peer competence. In this study, subjects were 341 preschoolers(170 boys, 171 girls) in 5 to 6 years of age and their mother living in Ulsan. The mother's personality in this research is based on Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) written by Eysenck and Eysenck(1975) with Lee, Hyun-Su(1985) standardized corresponding to Koreans, and was measured using a standard scale of Soh, Eon-Ju(2001). The parenting behavior is based on Thomas and Chess(1977), and scales modified by Cheon, Hee-Young(1992). Preschooler's emotional regulation was rated by teachers using subfactor, self-control and others-control from the emotional intelligence scale(Lee, 1997). The 'Peer Competence Scale'(Park & Lee, 2001) was used to investigate Preschooler's peer competence Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and path analysis. The major results of this study were as follows; First, in the results of analyzing the correlations among mother's personality, parenting behavior, preschooler's emotional regulation and peer competence, it is found that warm maternal parenting behavior and preschooler's emotional regulation was positively related to peer competence. Second, mother's personality showed an indirect effect on preschooler's emotional regulation through maternal parenting behavior. The higher maternal extroversion caused warm maternal parenting behavior more and preschooler's emotional regulation was increased by more warm maternal parenting behavior in consecutive order. On the other hand, the higher maternal neuroticism affected warm maternal parenting behavior less and preschooler's emotional regulation was decreased by less warm maternal parenting behavior. Third, parenting behavior showed an indirect effect on peer competence, mediated by preschooler's emotional regulation. it is found that higher warm parenting behavior become well preschooler's emotional regulation which affected peer competence high. Lastly, mother's personality showed an indirect effect on peer competence, mediated by maternal parenting behavior and preschooler's emotional regulation. In other words, extroversion among the mother's personalities influenced positively effect on warm maternal parenting behavior and preschooler's emotional regulation subsequently. As a result, peer competence is influenced positively indirect effect by preschooler's emotional regulation. Maternal neuroticism brought about negatively effect on warm maternal parenting behavior and preschooler's emotional regulation subsequently. As a result, peer competence is influenced negatively indirect effect by preschooler's emotional regulation also.
