This study is aimed to look through the works and life of Choi Kyu-Sang (Sul-song) who had brilliant talent for painting․calligraphy․seal cutting and left a significant mark in modern history of calligraphy. There, however, has been very few researches about his works. His clan originally came from Jeon-Ju. His nick name is Bak-Sim, pen name is Chun-gok․Sul-song and bynames are 'the lord of Nohadang and 'the lord of Chwimukheon'. As the 22nd generation of the Duke of Munseong, the originator of Jeon-ju Choi family, Choi Kyu-Sang was born on May 19, 1891, in Gosari Seokchi village, Iinbong Myen, Gimjegun. Choi Bo-Yeol is his father who was a Confucianist and a leader of Museong Seowon. Lee. Chio his second son of five children. Choi was married to a daughter of Kang Jae-Myeong at the age of 16 and had four sons (Byeong-Ho, Tae-Ho, Wan-Ho, Chung-Ho in a raw) and three daughters. The father of Choi was good at poem․painting․calligraphy as a Confucianist and scholar and made his son learn the regular script , one of the calligraphic styles of Chinese characters, using albums of excellent calligraphic works of Ouyang Xun and Yang Iin-Kyung to improve his skills for poem․painting․calligraphy. Choi also learned semi-cursive script through albums of Dong Qichang and the clerical script by a gold-bearing rock rubbing from Han Dynasty, the cursive script through a scrapbook of Bomukheon and posthumous works of Sir Mi-Nam. He began to show outstanding ability in his childhood when studying under Seok-Jeong. His father encouraged him to learn poem․painting․calligraphy, making him one of pupils of Seok-Jung who was a Confucian scholar at that time. Choi developed the skills for poem․painting․calligraphy with eagerness under Seok-Jeong and studied seal script․clerical script ․seal cutting under Kim Tae-Suk (Sung-Jae) whose fame spreaded throughout the China as a lead figure of seal cutting. Choi finally became a master in history of engraving after this. He devoted himself to calligraphy with a resolute attitude even under the disturbed social conditions and started to study at a surveying school at Gunsan to learn the modern learning after the Eulsa Treaty and death of his teacher, Seok-Jung.
He shortly served in Gimje county office in 1920 and trained the young learners after building Seokkyo school at Baksan Myen, Gimjegun in 1920. He valued virtue and practice in his education. In 1924, he became a head of Baksan district office and did the government service for seven years but moved to Jeonju. He resigned at the age of 30 and ran Haedong Inn. This was the time when he met Kim Tae-Suk who once stayed at the inn and learned seal script․ clerical script․seal cutting from him. About that time, he was taught drawing by Seo Beyong-Oh (Seok Jae). One of Choi's pupils is Bak Hong-Gi (Hak Jung) and he taught so hard his pupil painting․calligraphy․seal cutting that Bak took his place among great artists. Choi's calligraphy was accepted for the Josun art exhibition but this was the last time he sent his work to an art exhibition. On the other hand, he was working hard for the drawing and calligraphy having exhibitions in Jeonju, Kwangju and Daegu as well as art fairs with artists from all parts of the country. He also founded Hanmuk assembly, attended Emuk assemby which was led by Kim Eun-Ho and took part in Daedong Hanmuk assembly which is a grouping of master calligraphers all over the country. In 1946, he became a member of the Korean Academy and the Republic of Korea Academy of Arts. He was treated as a master calligrapher as showing a impromptu drawing when the Former President Rhee Syng-man visited Jeonju.
He was a good friend of Kim Tae-Seok (Sung Jae)․Oh Se-Chang (Wi Chang)․Byeon GwanSik (So Jung)․Ko Hui-Dong (Chun Gok)․Son Jae-Hyeng (So Jeon) ․Kim Eun-Ho (Yi Dang)․Kim Gi-Chang (Woon Bo)・Huh Bak-Ryeon(Ui Jae)・ Lee Sang-Bum(Chung Jeon)․Song Seong-Yong (Gang Am)・An Jong-Won (Seok Jeong)․Jeong In-Bo (Wee Dang)・ Min Hyeng-Sik (Woo Ha)․Kim Yong-Jin (Yong Woon). Choi was a man of integrity who had sturdy shape as his character.
He passed away in Jongdong, Jeonju at the age of 66 on July 25, 1956, having made a great contribution to the development of callilgraphy nearly half of his life. Even though he left great works of clerical script and seal cutting with his own creative way reflecting the traditions as a prominent seal cutter in the Honam district, his achievements have not been adequately appreciated in reality. I hope that Choi Gyu-Sang should be reevaluated as pivotal figure in history of calligraphy in Jeonbuk by seeking the hidden resources related his works.
