The purpose of this study is to investigate differences in perception on the rights of the child among parents; and to look into the relationship between parental perception on the rights of the child and parental child-rearing attitude, and the relative influence of the parental perception on the rights of child on the parental child-rearing attitude.
The research problems of this study are as follows:
Research problem 1. Is there any difference in the parental perception on the rights of the child according to parental educational background and occupation?
Research problem 2. What is the relationship between the degree of
parental perception on the rights of the child and the parental
child-rearing attitude?
Research problem 3. What is the relative influence of sub-factors of the parental perception on the rights of the child on the parental child-rearing attitude?
This study used a scale for examining the degree of parental perception on the rights of the child, which was identified through a pilot survey targeting a total of 380 parents in Busan comprising 190 fathers and 190 mothers, who had children under age 5; and a questionnaire for investigating the parental child-rearing attitude. The questionnaires were distributed by mail to and collected from nursery facilities, which were informed of the purpose of this study and were requested to cooperate on the study. The data collected were statistically analyzed, using SPSSWIN 12.0 program.
The findings of this study are as follows:
First, it was found that mothers placed more emphasis on the right to live among sub-factors of the perception on the rights of the child, compared to fathers. With regard to the variable of parental background, mothers with a degree of college or above thought highly of the right to custody and the right to participation among sub-factors of the rights, compared to mothers with a degree of high school or under or with a degree of junior college.
Second, the more highly parents thought of the rights of the child, the more positive their child-rearing attitude was. Likewise, the more highly parents thought of the right to live, the right to develop, the right to freedom, and the right to participation, 4 sub-factors of the perception on the rights of the child, the more positive their child-rearing attitude was.
Third, as for the influence of sub-factors of the perception on the rights, the more highly a father thought of the right to live, the lower his controlling attitude of child-rearing was; however, the more highly a father thought of the right to develop, the more he showed the affectionate and the controlling attitude of child-rearing. In the case of the mothers, the more highly they thought of the right to develop, the more they showed the controlling attitude of child-rearing; and the more highly they thought of the right to participation, the more they showed the affectionate attitude of child-rearing.
This study clarified differences in perception on the rights of the child among parents, and the relationship between parental perception on the rights of the child and parental attitude of child-rearing. And the study suggested the necessity of the education of parents about perception on the rights of the child, after looking into the influence of perception on the rights of the child on parental attitude of child-rearing by sub-factor of the perception on the rights of the child; and provided basic data on the contents and methods of parental education implementation, which are needed for putting the parental education into practice.
