The acoustic gain of audio system is strongly related with howling that is generated by an acoustic feedback circuit (AFC). The AFCs are unstable and can diverge due to positive feedback. The conditions for the howling are provided by the properties between potential howling frequency (PHF) and phase. The occurrence of howling can be also affected by the positions of microphone and loudspeaker, room shape and arrangement, the position and movement of talker, room temperature, etc. Furthermore, it is also difficult to distinguish the original and howling signals, before recognizing the howling sound. Thus, it is very difficult to predict the howling in advance. Conventionally, the gain of the PHF is reduced by a notch filter in order to prevent the occurrence of howling. However, the notch filer distorts original sound, and can generate new PHFs. In addition, the howling frequency must be accurately detected. However, the detection of accurate howling frequency requires a large amount of computations, such as that of least mean square (LMS) method. Therefore, an efficient method should be developed to detect the occurrence of howling and to control it without distortion. First, in this paper, we propose a new method for the detection of howling frequency, which is based on the statistical analysis of temporal power spectra. When the howling occurs, the change of temporal power spectra and the value of standard variation become small compared with those in normal conditions. Therefore, the change of standard variation can allow the detection of the howling frequency. The proposed method was evaluated under the various reverberation time conditions, and was shown to be suitable for the howling detection. Second, we also propose a new method that gives improved howling margin for the audio amplifier system by using all-pass filters with phase dispersion. The proposed method can suppress PHF to control the phase around howling frequency without distortion with all-pass filters, and can eliminate the unexpected PHFs with phase dispersion. From the experiments, the howling margin was shown to be improved.
