As society progresses toward knowledge informatization, the socio-economic role of university education for enhancing national competitiveness and fostering creative talent is growing ever more in importance. Problem-based Learning (here in after referred to as PBL) is a representative example of the constructivist model which is being introduced as a teaching and learning model suited for adapting to such changes in the role of university education. Though there have been many attempts to introduce and apply PBL to a variety of academic fields, however, it is not yet actively used in university education. In order for PBL to become established and disseminated in university education, instructors need to gain a correct understanding of the cognitive process and learning strategies, etc. as well as the social and emotional changes and developmental processes that learners experience during the PBL process. To meet this challenge, this study aims to identify the types of learning outcomes and learning affections demonstrated by PBL and explore the characteristics and significance exhibited in each respective learning stage. To achieve these research objectives, I designed and operated an elective course for majors offered at the college of business administration at K University from March 2011 to July 2011 and focused on the 58 students who participated in the course case study, collecting reflective journals and course evaluation survey questionnaires as well as compiling a researcher’s observation journal. These collected data were analyzed using NVivo 9, a qualitative data analysis tool. The analytical results of this study can be summarized as follows. I derived the conclusion that the types of learning outcomes demonstrated in PBL include ‘interest in and understanding of the PBL method,’ ‘comprehension, application, and extension of the learning contents,’ ‘cooperative learning ability,’ ‘cognitive skills,’ ‘communication skills,’ ‘changes in habits and attitudes during learning and in daily life,’ ‘acceptance of diverse perspectives and opinions,’ etc. and also identified that the types of learning affections include ‘interest and motivation regarding learning,’ ‘affective bonding among team members,’ ‘self-efficacy (confidence, expectation, sense of achievement),’ ‘a radical change in previous conceptions about learning,’ ‘originality in learning situations,’ ‘difficulties experienced during the PBL process,’ ‘satisfaction with the course,’ etc. Next, upon examining the characteristics and significance of learning outcomes in each learning stage, I observed that the most frequently exhibited feature during the problem presentation stage was ‘interest and understanding regarding the PBL method,’ as the learner’s interest was aroused by their exposure to a new teaching and learning method, while during the project implementation stage, the ‘cooperative learning ability’ was the most prominently demonstrated feature since students actively engaged in learning activities in team units to solve problems. Lastly, during the presentation and evaluation stage, ‘comprehension, application, and extension of the learning contents’ was most frequently demonstrated as students accumulated knowledge about the learning contents of the respective subject matter and broadened their understanding by listening to the diverse views presented by other teams. As regards the characteristics and significance of learning affections at each learning stage, my analysis found that ‘interest and motivation regarding learning’ was the learning affection that was demonstrated with the highest frequency overall, from the problem presentation stage to the presentation and evaluation stage, and this was followed by ‘emotional bonding among team members.’ It appears that these affects were generated through a natural process as students autonomously acquired new knowledge in an active learning environment and engaged as a member of a team in the project of building creative output differentiated from the work of other teams. Focusing on the results obtained from this study, I was able to summarize the following key points regarding the discussion on the attitudes and roles that should characterize instructors who aim to serve as learning stimulators in PBL. First, the instructor must have a conviction regarding the value of PBL and maintain a trusting and patient demeanor toward the learners, making an effort to express interest and empathy regarding their learning affections. Secondly, the instructor must utilize questions so as to encourage learners to autonomously build their knowledge, proceeding from questions at the general level to questions with greater specificity. During this process, the instructor must also provide the learners with encouragement to engage in reflective thinking and sustain motivation. Lastly, it is anticipated that this research can be utilized in the following ways. First, instructors who seek to implement PBL will be able to use the understanding of the types of learning outcomes and learning affections derived from this study to facilitate their efforts to design PBL classes adapted to a variety of class conditions. Secondly, in light of the fact that our contemporary mode of education is characterized by learning activities that have gradually transcended the frame of formal education and now take place not only at schools but also amid daily life, I conclude that Generic Learning Outcomes can be used for the measurement and categorization of the learning outcomes of PBL, which are as situational, contextual and complex as in informal education. Thirdly, this study will assist in adopting and administering PBL as teaching and learning method for contemporary university education, which is pursuing creative character building education and integrated education. The new paradigm for universities in the 21st century demands innovative and original education befitting the conditions of the new era, and universities must offer education that fulfills the demands of students and the society. PBL is a representative example of a teaching and learning method that is suited to meet these demands of our era. This study has analyzed and presented a case study of PBL applied at a university as a teaching and learning model for the purpose of fostering the learner’s ability to search and utilized accurate information and data and developing critical, logical, and creative thinking and problem solving capabilities. This study will therefore be able to contribute to the understanding and dissemination of PBL as a practice and to its scholarly development.
