The purpose of study was to identify the longitudinal trends in obesity and its associated factors among middle school students. Study participants were 515 students, 280 male and 235 female students, from a middle school in Kyeongido. Student health records from 1st to 9th grade in their school were analyzed by mainly height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) to identify their trends of obesity. The obesity associated factors in 14 year-old middle school students were investigated using the questionnaire developed by the researcher. According to BMI at the 1st year and at the 9th year in school, participants in this study were divided into four groups, which were group I continuous non-overweight group, group II continuous overweight (obese) group, group III transition from non-overweight to overweight (obese) group, and group IV transition from overweight (obese) to non-overweight. The Data were analyzed with IBM statistics 20.0. 71.8% of all participants was assigned to group I, 10.5% to groupⅡ, 8.9% to group, and 8.7% to group Ⅳ. This study showed that the ratio of overweight students in middle school was similar to that of the students in the national health examination, which was 19.4%. Male students showed higher overweight tendency than female students. Male students had the highest level of growth in between 6th grade and 7th grade of their school, and female students had the highest level of growth between 4th grade and 5th grade in elementary school. The periods where overweight (obese) group and non-overweight group intersected during the 9 years were between 4th and 5th grade in elementary school for male students, and between 6th and 7th grade in school for female students. Among the obesity associated factors in this study, the scores of eating habits, appearance evaluation in body image, physical activity, satisfaction on appearance, and perceived body shape were significantly different among the four groups. In specific, students in group II who were continuously overweight presented the best eating habits, whereas students in group I, who were continuously non-overweight, showed the worst eating habits. Finally, we found that there were strong differences between male and female students and turning points in which students experienced major changes in their obesity trends. Considering the critical periods, we recommend that health practitioners and parents engage in this issue earlier to get the better health outcome.
