The present study investigates the motivations of old adult English learners in social and cultural contexts in Korea. The researcher focused on the relationships between face, possible selves, and participatory motivations of adult English learners. It was highlighted the impact of face and possible selves on Korean adult English learners’ participatory motivations which were categorized into three sub-types: goal-oriented, activity-oriented, and learning-oriented ones. This study was conducted in two adult institutions granting primary or secondary school degrees by collecting questionnaire surveys from 145 old adult English learners. By using PASW 18.0, a series of quantitative statistics such as reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, stepwise regression analysis, t-test, and ANOVA were conducted. The results are as follows. First, the result of correlation analysis indicated that adult English learners’ face had a significant correlation with activity-oriented motivation in learning participatory motivations. The ideal self in possible selves showed a significant correlation with all three sub-types in motivation for learning participation. Second, based on the regression analysis of the influence of face and possible selves on learning participatory motivation, it was found that only the ideal self was the statistically significant predictor for goal-oriented and activity-oriented learning participatory motivations. For learning-oriented learning participatory motivation, however, both ideal self and ought-to self were turned out to be meaningful predictors. Face was not identified as a statistically significant predictor for learning participatory motivation. Third, among individual characteristics, the level of monthly income, accommodation type (i.e., living with other family members), and the foreign sojourn experience proved to be significant factors for face, possible selves, and learning participatory motivation. This study has the following educational implications. First, more administrative support should be given to old adults’ English learning and learning in general. It will be required to conduct adult learners’ needs analysis and to develop a systematic curriculum for them considering the old adults’ specific characteristics. Second, we need to conduct an in-depth study of possible selves in the field of adult education. This study indicates that possible selves, particularly the ideal self, had a significant impact on all sub-types of learning participatory motivation. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct various research on possible selves in the future. Third, we need to conduct an in-depth study of face in the field of adult education.
