This study has been made in order to propose an effective teaching-learning media which is expected to have positive effects on long-term memory as well as on interest and attention of children from the English education of young children. The purposes of this study were to investigate the effect of playing with manipulative materials as a sensory aid that can be directly touched and felt by children from play perspective according to the developmental feature of young children, and to apply the teaching-learning method through individual activities according to free choice of children to alphabet learning, proving its effectiveness. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, research questions are as follows; 1) Dose it have positive effects on alphabet learning to play with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners? 2) Does it have positive effects on long-term memory in alphabet learning to play with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners? For the purposes of this study, 24 students who are 7 years old at the H kindergarten located in Incheon are classified into experimental group and control group through prior homogeneity test. Experimental group and control group consist of 12 kindergarteners respectively. The subjects for the experiment were observed for a total of 20-turn classes in 5 weeks. In experimental group, ‘playing with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners' was applied to Alphabet learning. With the first evaluation after experimental class, it was proven whether it was effective for alphabet learning. Through the second evaluation performed in 2 weeks, the long-term memory effect on alphabet learning was proven. In addition, by checking the frequency of using manipulative materials by children during experimental group class, this study analyzed correlation between the frequency of using manipulative materials and the degree of grade improvement. Through children’s behavior observation checklist for use of manipulative materials, the importance of observation records was to be presented based on the diversity and individuality of children with the basis of children's behavioral change. Research results are summarized as follows; First, playing with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners was found to be effective for alphabet learning. In addition, while there were even improvements in all of 3 lower areas of alphabet learning, the range of improvement was the biggest in alphabet knowledge, followed by vocabulary and early reading ability, and then by phonemic awareness. This proved that the use of manipulative materials for helping young children's sensory development through hand-eye coordination is very effective for identification of alphabet letter shape, matching of capital letters and small letters, and telling the name of capital letters and small letters through visual discrimination, rather than phonemic awareness for auditory discriminations. Second, playing with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners was proven to be effective for long-term memory in alphabet learning. While the second evaluation that was performed in 2 weeks after the first evaluation showed relative fall in grade, the extent of the fall was not big and the phonemic awareness showed the biggest fall among 3 lower areas of alphabet learning, followed by vocabulary and early reading ability, and then by alphabet knowledge. It shows the manipulative materials activity is more effective for visual recognition than sound recognition as the phonemic awareness with the smallest extent of rise at the first evaluation showed the biggest fall. In this regard, it presents the necessity of complementary tools such as electronic optical pen that enables children to listen repeatedly and that shows a lot of effect on sound recognition when playing manipulative materials activity. Third, as a result of correlation analysis according to the frequency of using manipulative materials by children and the grade improvement before and after learning, the more kindergarteners use manipulative materials, the better their grade improvement is. This reveals the results that the providing of plentiful sensory materials is essential to learning principle for young children. Fourth, while the frequency of using manipulative materials by children and grade improvement showed high correlation, it cannot be applied to all children equally in terms of individuality and diversity. For example, even though some children used manipulative materials a lot they didn't improve their grade so much. On the other hand, some children who showed high grade improvement in comparison to the frequency of materials were not creative or didn't have much interest in using materials. Consequently, this research showed that this learning should be approached from different direction which is based on the principle of children's individuality. In conclusion, this study shows that playing with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners resulted in positive effects on alphabet learning and long-term memory, which demonstrates the understanding of brain science that learning contents can be memorized for the long period. In this regard, first of all, the English education of young children should be based on understanding of young children's developmental feature, and learning effects can be obtained when they are provided with abundant sensory educational environment suitable for such developmental feature. Therefore, this study expects that playing with manipulative materials through the voluntary self-activity of kindergarteners will be actively utilized as an effective teaching-learning media in the field of childhood English education.
