Osteoporosis is known as the “silent disease” because there are no apparent early symptoms. However, lifestyle factors such as nutrition, smoke and alcohol use, body weight and physical activity appear to play a role in bone health and osteoporosis risk as well as it also linked to menopause. In this study, we used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010 to assess lifestyle and dietary risk factors for osteoporosis among postmenopausal women. From KNHANES V, we collected information about various lifestyle factors that could potentially be associated with osteoporosis. The variables included, socio-demographics, and lifestyle factors such as smoking, drinking, physical and activity level. Nutrient intake data was obtained by a 24-hr recall method. We also obtained food group data from the FFQ. The 1655-postmenopausal-over-45 women are selected as a target of this study except for pre-menopause women and men over 45 of 8958 persons. This 1655 persons are divided into three groups and examined in accordance with fields of study and ages on raw data. The first main results, the increasing ages is strongly associated with developing osteoporosis among Korean post menopausal women. In the study, the osteopenia and osteoporosis are tended to be increased women ages 60 to 74. However, a higher income and a higher level of education are positively associated with lower prevalence of osteoporosis. Secondly, there is no significant difference in the smoking and coffee intake. However, the smoking rate tend to be high in the osteopenia and osteoporosis group compared to their normal counterparts. Also, rate of drinking was significantly lower among no osteoporosis women (normal). Thirdly, bone mass density was significantly inversely associated with body weight and body mass index. Osteoporosis risk was significantly decreased to overweight women. Fourthly, the rate of osteoporosis occurrence is relatively lower in women who doing of moderate and vigorous physical activities. It is effective to regularly take exercise three times a week over 20 minutes as the sweats badly comes out. It is also good for increasing the bone density and preventing osteoporosis. Fifthly, all food group consumption was tended to decline with ages. Also, consumption of fish, fruit, vegetable and dairy product declined from the normal to the osteoporosis women. The intake of calcium, potassium, vitamin A, thiamin, and vitamin C were significantly low in osteoporosis women. The fiber, calcium, potassium, riboflavin intakes were inadequately among Korean women with osteopenia and osteoporosis compared to recommended nutrient intake by the KDRI. The normal group showed significantly higher intake of calcium, potassium, vitaminC, protein, and niacin. In addition, the fiber intake was relatively low in among Korean women In conclusion, osteoporosis was highly prevalent in this Korean women. According to our results, osteoporosis is closely associated with income and education level. In addition, a wide range of physical activities may prevent from the osteoporosis risk. These findings indicate that more targeted nutrition and physical activity interventions for reduce osteoporosis to improve health among postmenopausal korean women.
